The Aerial Tram at Snowbird, UT

Installed in 1971 by Garaventa A.G. of Switzerland, the tram was one of the first four skilifts at Snowbird Ski Resort when the resort first opened. In the summer of 2004, Skilifts.org was fortunate enough to get a tour of this amazing lift and below are some pictures from our experience.

Here's the Red cabin's carriage.

Another shot of the Red cabin's carriage. The two cables one the outside are the track rope cables which is what the carriage rolls on, while the rope that's in the middle is the haul rope which pulls the cabin up the mountain.

This is the area that the Blue cabin's carriage rests on in the lower terminal.

This piston helps prevent the cabin from rolling back while in the lower terminal.

The device you see here in the picture is what is known as the 'saddle.' This device is what keeps tension on the aerial tram's track ropes and moves very slowly back and forth. Two of these devices are used on this lift since there are two cars.

This is the evac system for the aerial tram if it ever needs to be used.
