Maybe if the photo could be enlarged- it won't let me open it up like a normal thumbnail would. That and seeing the tower more fully would help.

Sorry the image doesn't get any larger. It looks like it does use the insert gip though

I think I can see a clamp. Do you know where what ski area this is located at? Maybe we could find some more pictures that way of the lift.

It does look like a waterski handle. If I remember correctly, Vail's West Wall handle tow has a few of these, along with a few platters

It'd easily be as akward as a rope tow or handle tow with poles in hand. Also it would be an interesting ride and scary for your back at the top when you right yourself from a hunched over position you assume.

Thanks for the expanded pic, Allan.
The lift is a Poma F-series (you can tell from the grip and the roller-wheel derail switch), although I didn't know they made retractable-type handles like that. The D-handle would be great for snowboarders; in fact, we went to a different style of platter on our two that have slots to grab onto if you're a boarder. It's much easier than trying to ride the lift like a skier.

I hate the handle tows, when you first grab it it rips your arm off!
