I saw these on various lifts, what is their purpose? You can see on the one below on the left side of the photo.

In your pic it's an oil drain for the Cat planetary gearbox.

Images here show the same ideas- Many planetary’s come from the Caterpillar group. B/W image is a small dewalt drill. Dozers just have a flush plug instead of an exterior valve. Universal gearbox of choice since the late 1970s due to its relative lower cost, smaller size and higher horsepower output ability from the large tooth contacts.

And Cat dealers are everywhere, parts usually take 24hrs. My Lohmann parts are about 9-10 months delivery

Hey Rat, wanted to use your photo there as it was an excellent example and I was looking at the awesome lifts you have there at Loon. You say it is not an oil drain for yours then? That is an old Hall bullwheel, correct?

And everyone else, thank you for the education, I love learning this stuff.

…and the concept is not really new as this patent image from 1921 shows an axel powering a wheel.
Notice the brown…those are wood spokes…still the same concept, it was just used 50 years later!

Its not my photo but I'm a mechanic at Loon. It is an oil drain. We drained a Cat Hub at a different lift the day of my first comment. We drained the hub at this lift during the summer. This is not a Hall Bullwheel. It is a CTEC. The towers and return bull wheel are from three different Halls that used to operate at Loon.

During a visit to the Salt Lake Doppelmayr factory in 2007 I was mildly amused to find the new, unpainted bull wheels still have Catapillar yellow CAT Hubs.

Here is a unicycle with a two speed planetary hub...
No draining necessary

That's funny, I took a pic with my camera phone in 2007 when I was in SLC!

Allan, I remember our mountains both got new lifts in 2007 and we attended separate New Installation Orientations.
