Just saw this video posted on Facebook from backcountry.com. Not sure what he was doing to fall off the lift.

A more detailed article is here: http://www.santafene...l2#.USf4w2dhgmw

Cliff notes version:
-He fell while attempting to throw a snowball at a friend in the next chair.
-He held on for 6 minutes - from tower 8 through tower 21 and managed to take off his snowboard.
-Injuries were a lacerated liver and tears in both lungs, as well as a hairline skull fracture and a gash on his forehead that required 16 stitches.

And that's a lift that happens to have safety bars.

Comfort Bars.
I haven't seen the video yet, but I can totally see how this would happen. Twisting to throw a snowball, which forces him to slide forward until he's off the edge (which would be underneath the bar, mind you) and being able to hang on for a bit. My youngest pulled herself all the way back in her seat last week to show me that it made her skis point straight up, just to prove that 'I can't sit all the way back like the sign says, Dad!' I'm guessing it was the same with this kid. Hopefully he recovers fully.
