I noticed several days ago that Chair 1 at Snow Summit is shut down for maintenance reasons. It remains shut down and today I noticed that Chair 9 at Bear Mountain is also shut down as well for the same reason.

Both are CTEC detachable quads. Is anyone aware of any issues with these lifts?

Chair 2 at Snow Summit remains open, but it would be a disaster if that lift were to close.

A multitude of reasons can be the reason for closing a lift, regardless of make.

What is interesting about the situation at Snow Summit is that the lift that is closed is the "main" chairlift from the base area to the top of the mountain (Chair 1). There is another chair servicing the same terrain (chair 2), but that chair begins higher up the hill so skiers and boarders have to hike uphill to get to the chair.

Chair 1 at Snow Summit has now been closed for at least three weeks with the only notice being given as "closed for maintenance." It's pretty obvious to us regulars at Snow Summit that the resort would never close this chair in the middle of winter -- especially for several weeks -- unless something really bad had occurred.

Just would be interesting to try to find out what actually happened, and what needs to be done to get the chair up and running again. I don't know if they are waiting on a part (for three weeks??) or on money (doubtful) or on an inspection.

The only thing that I can think of that could take three weeks are gearbox parts. Everything else should be accessible if the money is there.

skierrob, Keymech- thank you for the replies. It's not entirely unusual late in the season for Snow Summit to not operate Chair 1, but not in January and February. I also doubt that money is an issue since I'm pretty certain that Snow Summit/Bear Mountain combined get over 750,000 skier visits a year.

Yooper Skier- I'm well aware that there are many reasons why a lift can be closed. There was no point in stating the obvious to me which I'm well aware of. My original question was valid and I'm not an idiot.

Yooper Skier didn't state that you were an idiot, he just said that there are a lot of different failures that can debilitate a lift. Don't read tone into a post.

Tower footing issue
Rope splice issue
Drive motor when kaboom
Tower assembly
Bullwheel bearings
Bullwheel crack
Structural issue with steel work of a terminal
Safety issue not address and the tramway board shut them down (a stretch here)

Chair 9 appears to be a fixed grip tripple

Speculation and assumption is not very rewarding unless you are correct in guesses. Deducted logic is another story. Are there any lift maint. employees from said area to shed some factual info here?

I think that he means Chair 9 at Bear Mountain, Snow Summit's sister ski area. It's detachable.

By the way, are either of these lifts open again?
