The second half of the video is more interesting with people jumping off
Apparently it is in Europe, but no idea where.

What are your thoughts on what happened?

It took them long enough to get that thing stopped. It was odd, yet probably good, how well the speed was controlled unlike the case at Devils Head a couple years ago. It almost looked as if the motor was running in reverse and they could not get it stopped.

It does not look like the lift had much incline so there was not much weight to get it going too fast. Once most of the weight was off it was able to slow down.
Luckilly no one seemed to be seriously hurt (glad there was soft snow). Not a funny situation despite the laughter.

That's Eastern Europe, Romania, county of Maramureș, Șuior ski resort (pronounce "shooyor"). It happened on January 21st 2012, around 13:00.
It's an old chairlift, probably built back in the communist regime, running on bribes and some electricity.
Osha, the small town in Wisconsin, has plenty of promiscuous sister cities around the world.

The explanation presented by the ski area manager to TV reporters was that snow-laden branches fell over power lines.
Apparently, the skiers were brought back in a controlled way, and then the brakes failed.
Here's a Șuior resort ad:

And the chairlift in slighty better days:

In January 23rd, 2010 the same chairlift made it to scrolling news as it stopped for more than an hour, with about 150 skiers dangling.

The next day, for more than half an hour.

Darn commie microswitches. Should export them to Iran, it'll put Stuxnet to shame.

Just think, if that thing had managed to gain even more speed, it would have been like this (http://www.vidoosh.t...skimo-chairlift), only with people getting flung instead of concrete blocks.

I simply blows my mind how seemingly nonchalant the people in this were. If only they knew the physics that were at work! Thank God it appears nobody was injured.

Interesting video on the destructive testing. Most surprising to me was the fire broke the cable. Does anyone know if the results prompted nay design or regulatory updates?

For some reason that link opens up the App Store to a porno app on my iPad. Might want to be careful with that site.

Any accidental harmful links are unintentional.

The initial poster's video shows the same forces that were deliberately invoked by the Eskimo destruction tests.
