Anybody know the if the Porcupine Mountains in Upper Michigan are going to open this season? Curious to know what's going to happen to the place since it is no longer under the management of Mt. Bohemia, and if the State wants to do anything with it. Also, any word on if the Miner-Denver double is going to receive some help or...??

Anybody got a pointer to more info?

The Porkikes are a great place to ski - it's where I fell in love with the sport. There's something special about looking over Lake Superior and skiing on 100% natural snow away from the crowds and trappings of commercialized ski resorts.

My hunch is that the state is in no position to put any money into it, so unless some private concessionaire takes it over it's probably done for.

There are rumors that another 'local' operator was working on picking up the operating lease. MSAA show is in a week, I know there are several areas that will be 'social hour' topics.

The Miner-Denver is in an unknown state, to me. Not sure if maintenance or state certification has occured over the last 5 years, I am guessing not. The lift itself is an odd ball...Miner Denver towers, chairs and line equipement, Riblet clips, and a CTEC motorroom/drive/control. All the sheave faceplates were modified for the clips. I know one of its issues was chair retainment around the upper bullwheel, it needed guideage or a modified flange on the bullwheel to limit chair swing---although the lift ran like this since it was modified in the late 80's?. If money was ever available, a nice, newer lift to the 'true west summit' would really change this place around---well, besides it very remote nature and lack of snowmaking. The Miner's terrain and the true western summit was cat serviced for a select few over the last few seasons. Previous operator had issues maintaining regular hours and with only 1/2 of its terrain being lift serviced, I feel ran the few skiers away. I personally waited till 1130am for the whole crew to arrive from Houghton and open.

By far, some of the most scenic skiing anywhere and some of the best intermediate terrain in the midwest.

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Gogebic Community College is partnering with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to run downhill skiing at the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

It will also seek to convince local ski hills that the partnership could help rather than harm their businesses.

During Tuesday's GCC Board of Trustees meeting, the trustees approved a partnership agreement, under which GCC's Ski Area Management program would take over the skiing operation

Update:
9/19/2012 12:33:00 AM GCC develops plans for Porkies ski hill
IRONWOOD - Gogebic Community College students will operate the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park ski hill for the 2012-'13 ski season under an agreement that was finalized last week with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

GCC President James Lorenson briefly discussed his college's partnership agreement with the MDNR on Monday at the Western Upper Peninsula Citizens Advisory Committee meeting at the college. Lorenson sits on the committee that offers advice to the MDNR.

"We're very excited about it," Lorenson said of the agreement.
