Huff Hills North Dakota, possibly? That's the only place I can think of west of the Missouri that's north of the Platte that would have trees like that.

I figured that must have been what you were thinking with the rivers that you named, but neither of the ski areas in the Black Hills has a chairlift like that, that I know of. I think that all the trees are evergreen there as well.
