PARK CITY —

A young University of Utah student died Sunday after a fall from a ski lift at Canyons' Ski Resort.

Resort spokesman Steve Pastorino said the woman was on the High Meadow chair lift when she fell at 11:49 a.m. Despite quick ski patrol response and on-board care during a medical flight to an area hospital, the woman was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Pastorino said a prior medical condition may have contributed to the woman's fall or death.

Her name was not released pending notification of her parents and family, who live out of state, he said.

The High Meadow lift is a ski slope used by beginners. The lift is as low as 15 feet off the ground to as high as 50 to 75 feet.

Pastorino said the woman's death is under investigation by the Summit County Sheriff's Office and the Utah State Medical Examiner's office.

Canyons equipment not at fault in woman's death

By Emiley Morgan January 30th, 2012 @ 4:04pm

PARK CITY — Officials do not believe the Sunday death of a 19-year-old University of Utah student had anything to do with equipment at the Canyons Ski Resort.

"The Canyons' equipment did not malfunction and was functioning properly at the time," Summit County sheriff's detective Ron Bridge said Monday.

Resort officials reported that the woman was on the High Meadow chair lift when she fell around 11:50 a.m. Sunday. The ski patrol responded quickly and the woman received care on a medical helicopter en route to a hospital, but the woman was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

A prior medical condition is believed to be the cause of the woman's fall, but Bridge could not provide details about the condition. The High Meadow lift is a ski slope used by beginners. The lift is as low as 15 feet off the ground to as high as 50 to 75 feet.

When asked if the woman was using a safety bar on the lift, Bridge said: "Our investigation is ongoing and … it appears everything was being used properly."

Police are waiting until the arrival of the woman's family from out-of-state before releasing her name.

My condolences to the woman's family. I have an issue with the statement above, however; I've seen several and heard of numerous example of medical conditions causing people to slide out of the carrier under the bar. An unconcious person cannot keep him- or herself in place in that situation, they'd have to be physically restrained with a seatbelt.

Why is the KSL stock image of Payday at PCMR for this story? Not even the same mountain!

High Meadow is a fixed quad with no footrests. I'd imagine footrests would help in a situation like this, to keep someone from sliding under a bar

Floridaskier,

I agree with you about an image of Payday at PCMR and the KSL is doing this all the times when any ski resorts have happened or accident or news. I only know PCMR has six passenger seat lifts than in Utah, most ski resorts have only four passenger seat lifts. I will email KSL and ask them about it.

Hi everyone,

I share with you that one of my friends have epilepsy and is a good skier. At Alta ski resort, she was with me and my friends...I rode with her on the lift. I asked her...what if she has seizure and fall from the lift. She said she really don't care because she wanted to have fun. The same thing with my friend's co worker at Deer Valley, had epilepsy, was a good skier and rode the lifts all the times. He doesn't care and wanted to have fun, too.

I am sorry about 19 years old U of U student died from fall from the lift.

Tombstone was updated to a ski pack a couple of years back. KSL has over used the pic of Payday. Sad story. :(
