Maybe the skier did not sit all the way back before the chair engaged on the haul rope and the footrest caught his jacket preventing him from falling completely to the ground.
It has always amazed me how people still fall off of detatchable chairs despite how easy they are to load and unload. It does not seem like they can be made any easier.
It can happen though. The only time I have misloaded a detatchable was as an adaptive ski instructor at Winter Park. My partner and I would have a heavy student in a mono or bi-ski and accidently not lift up high enough before pulling back. Thankfully the operator always stopped the chair quick enough but we did end up in "the pit" a couple times. We normally did not use footrests since they do not work with bi and mono skis.
