Does anyone know if the original lift 5 was a riblet as the other original lifts at Vail were?  Also does anyone know when it was replaced with the current dopp?

Also what were the improvements that Yan put into the sourdough?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Chair 5 is an original Doppelmayr installation from the early 60s. 1 through 4 were Riblets, 5 is still there (I guess 1 is too but it never runs) 6 was a Riblet and I don't know about the original 7 and 8. 9 and 10 are still Riblets, though 9 was shortened. The original 11 I don't know about, 12 was possibly 2 or 3 and relocated by Yan. 13 I also don't know about, and that brings us to 14.

Sourdough was originally an older (70s) Yan with the same carriers as Blackjack and Mountain Chief. Doppelmayr upgraded it somewhere in the 90s with new crossarms, sheaves, bullwheels, and carriers.

I think that the East river lift was the old Keytone lift at CB.

Couldn't be- it was on the same '93 map as the old Keystone lift. I haven't seen the actual lift yet- it was closed the day I went down there- but I'm pretty sure that it's an original installation there.

I noticed last weekend that under chair 5 there are torched off towers like there are when riblets are replaced. Also lift 1, Giant Steps, ran for a few days arround Xmas and when I was there on the 26 they ran it for about three hours. I ended up with the last ride of the day. The operator at the bottom said he didnt think they would run it again this year unless the village was really busy. I got some pics of it allong with the vista bahn and the riva bahn for pusher, which are posted in another forum. Unfortunately lift 1 will be gone next year.

That's interesting because I thought that Vail bought Chair 5 as a Doppelmayr then went back to Riblets. Maybe the current lift is actually a second-generation one and not the original, then.

I dont know if this helps with identifying the original style and make of the lift but I got a pic of the torched off tower I saw.

Well I guess it's fair to say that was not a Riblet.

Looks a little small to support a chairlift. Sure this wasn't a T-Bar or some other light load lift?

That was my thought too... they kinda look about the size of our T-Bar towers.

That pic was taken off the chairlift so it may not be a good perspective. Ill get some more pics and take some measurements if i can get to it next time I'm at Vail.

Judging from the weeds around it, the base does look like an old embedded Riblet tower. Some of the original tubes they used were only 12" in diameter. They went to 18" in later years.

Chair 5 at vail (high noon) was an original lift when vail opened. It was not as long as the current lift 5. I think it was a riblet.

I'm not sure when it was replaced, but the current lift 5 appears to be a Doppelmayr triple. From the looks of the lift it was replace between 1975 and '90.

Based on the terain and line it couldnt be any shorter. It was probably replaced closer to 1975 than 1990.

It wasn't much shorter but it was slightly. When you ride the current lift, you pass over a gully prior to climbing up the ridge. They reworked the land some to provide the current starting location which is south of the gully. The original landing spot was on the north side of the gully.

I think the old chairlift double at the PNE Vancouver was relocated to Mt.Seymour and is now the brockton chair.

Did the current lift replace an older one? We have a '92-'93 map in the shop and it shows the East River lift.
