I've heard of a ski hill that has installed some sort of funnel that wraps around lift towers that public can toss their trash into which empties into a collector at the base of the tower. Does anyone know where this is or have any ideas for keeping garbage off the lift line?

I am not sure about that. For years Bear Mountain, CA had had a set of cans near the top of the Bear Mountain Express. It was a trash target at a spot that the carriers were not too high and it was flat and kind of contained naturally so the trash did not go with gravity if it missed the can. Being in a flat almost bowl shaped spot allowed for easy clean up too.
