Whistler Village Gondola to reopen Sunday
January 15, 2011
The Whistler Village Gondola is expected to reopen on Sunday morning (Jan. 16) after a six day closure due to mechanical failure.
Whistler Blackcomb officials announced on the company's Facebook page that the gondola will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The Fresh Tracks program is set to resume on Tuesday (Jan. 18).
The Village Gondola has been out of commission since Monday (Jan. 10) when a mechanical failure caused the lift to break down with approximately 300 people onboard.
The problem was a bearing failure in the gondola's main gearbox. Replacement parts and a Swiss technician arrived in the resort late Wednesday (Jan. 12), but it's unknown how long the repair will take.

This lift has two ways of powering the evac. One is via an auxilliary input to the main gearbox. The second one(which was used in this case) uses a hydrostatic drive to power hydraulic motors that are meshed to a ring gear on the bullwheel. The main gearbox is disconnected. This photo shows a similar setup on the P2P.
