Greetings from the Holiday Inn Express on the side of I-595 in Sunrise, FL (near Fort Lauderdale), where we have gone after being evacuated once again. They say that the eye should hit around midnight a little north of our house (If you hear St. Lucie County on TV, that's two counties north of us, or about 25 miles) The good thing about this is that it's moving at 15 mph. Frances stopped dead right over us and we got pounded for over a day. This should get in and out by tomorrow morning, when we'll drive back and see what we're dealing with. It's been 25 years since our last hurricane before Frances, so it fits that the next should be 25 days later. We're enjoying our last few hours of power with the room air conditioner on freezing so that when the power goes out tonight it'll be as cool as possible

Doesn't the hotel have back up generators? I mean if the power goes, do the electronic key card door readers stop working or those could be on a different power supply. Anyway, I think the Holiday Inn would have back up generators to support a structure that big.

I don't think so, they gave us a letter at the front desk explaining what to do if the power goes out (i.e. don't use candles, only flashlights)
That would be a huge generator just for the lights, not even the air conditioner, which is what we really want, and they're pretty expensive

Power stayed on at the hotel last night...we called home every hour and if the answering machine picked up, the power was on. The last call was at 8:40 and it was still on, then at 7:40 this morning it was off. We're heading back today after our free breakfast. FPL estimates up to three weeks for power to be back on this time because it will be harder to get the help they need from neighboring power companies already tied up with Ivan and waiting to see if Jeanne will come to their own areas. So it may be a while before we're back up. Or it could be a easy fix in which case it'll be up soon. We'll see.

One of the hotels in town here has a backup generator - if the power goes out in Rossland, the whole town goes out partying, because it powers the bar too!! :)

Finally moving into the new house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The computer will be in a box, hopefully away from 2-year-old's helping hands, so hang in tight and I will be back soon. Hope you don't miss me too much!

Tyler- glad to hear that you made it through okay. How many more hurricanes are supposed to be making their way to you now? Isn't predicting the weather fun... :)

The power came back on today around 6. It flicked on for maybe 2 seconds around 5, that was really disappointing that it didn't stay long, but I guess they were working on it when that happened. Anyway, we were really lucky this time, which is only fair as we were one of the last places to get power back last time. 14 total days without power in september

As for school, we missed 7 days for Frances, and so far 2 for Jeanne, and they'll be deciding tomorrow when to start again. They schedule four extra days for something like this, but that still leaves 7, so they have taken out every Monday holiday that they give us on the last day of a vacation before we go back on Tuesdays. I don't know what they're going to do with these next few days. Midterms have been cancelled for us

Ouch (although missing midterms can't be all bad...)
I'm back online after uncrating the computer. Strange how moving six-and-a-half blocks is harder than moving halfway across the country. But we're almost done unpacking, and we're faced with the odd prospect of being able to change something we don't like after consulting... NO ONE! (Sorry if I get excited- at least I don't overuse the exclamation point like my wife, who wrote the last post.)

Thanksgiving, all the family will be here for most of the week, so they'l all want to talk and I won't be on a whole lot, also I'm on 28K dial-up because Powerlink is working pretty well right now  so I can't just drop in for a few minutes. Anyway, I'll get on some, not too much though.
What's everyone else doing?
