CBC News
Posted ImageThe chairlifts at B.C.'s Whistler ski resort operate for sightseeing during the summer. (CBC)A 75-year-old woman has died after a chairlift accident Thursday in Whistler, B.C.

The woman was trying to board the Solar Coaster Express chairlift on Blackcomb Mountain at about 3:30 p.m. PT when she apparently fell four metres off a raised platform, said RCMP Sgt. Shawn Lemay.

Paramedics transported the woman to hospital, where she was declared dead, Lemay said.

He said the woman, whose name has not been released, was a tourist from elsewhere in Canada and was visiting Whistler with family members.

Although it's not skiing season at the Whistler Blackcomb resort, the chairlifts are still in operation for sightseeing.

Whistler is about 100 kilometres north of Vancouver.

After watching the news story, they stated she was knocked over by a passing chair after failing to load... I guess they'll probably go after the operator... not sure why they have a drop off that is not fenced near their load ramp.

A 75-year-old woman died Thursday after falling off a chairlift platform on Blackcomb Mountain.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the Solar Coaster Express chairlift deck, according to Whistler RCMP Sgt. Shawn LeMay.

According to preliminary witness reports, it appears the woman, who was with five family members, was in the process of getting on to one of the chairs to go down the mountain when she looked away, was struck by an incoming chair and fell off the raised platform.

Whistler-Blackcomb staff and emergency services assisted the woman and attempted CPR as she was airlifted to Whistler Medical Centre.

Police are not releasing her name, at her family's request. However, they have confirmed she is a Canadian citizen from outside of B.C.
