I gave in - I just had to have one of these: the most recent product of the imagination of James Dyson, the English industrial designer who redesigned the household vacuum cleaner - creating a revolution. Nearly every manufacturer of household vacuum cleaners has now copied his design - I sincerely hope they each paid dearly for the rights. He tried for years to sell them on the idea - his words falling on deaf ears.

Dyson's designs always spring from completely fresh thinking, are always well-developed before going to market - and always work better than their competition. I'd be interested in anything he brings to market. I'd be even more interested in working with the guy.

The "air multiplier" is essentially a "blade-less" fan. Actually, it does use a small impeller inside the base of the unit that generates a modest flow at slightly increased pressure. This "compressed" air is directed through a thin ring of ports that surround the inside of a 10" ring. The ejected "high velocity" film streams along a carefully designed airfoil, creating a venturi effect that draws an additional large volume of air through the ring. The result is a substantial air flow that is perfectly free of turbulence.

If you've been considering buying one of these things, be assured that it works as advertised and that it's a technical delight.

Go James, Go.

There are three roads to ruin; women, gambling and technicians. The most pleasant is with women, the quickest is with gambling, but the surest is with technicians. Georges Pompidou
