I've never rode a lift with a carpet, so does the black dashed line indicate the correct loading position, because if it does it looks like he ran out of ramp prior to the chair getting to him. Is the carpet out of calibration with the line?

No the black line was not where they were supposed to be. there is no specific positioning on a carpet. the problem is the skiers slid forward once they touched carpet. when that happens there is a chance that one may roll off the end of it before the chair reaches said rider. that is what happened to the skier on the right. in that situation it is best to shuffle backward the avoid going off the end but not many people know that.

Very interesting!

I never see the loading carpet myself.

This made me think, is it a big problem when lifts with loading carpets have a larger than normal gap between the last chair and chair #1? It seems like skiers could follow the chair before theirs out and the carpet would spit them off the end before their chair arrives?

I would assume that there is a sensor placed at the lower terminal that would turn on the belt when a carrier passes it, bringing the riders to the loading area to board the lift.

you are correct. At least I know that chair kids have a sensor that cues the loading gates. the sensor makes sure that the gates only open when there is a chair so there would be no problems with uneven spacing.

hard to tell from the vid but seems the skiers are close to or at the end of the conveyor and the chair hasn't fully arrived yet. shouldn't they be loading sooner? almost seems like the load gates are opening late.

Supreme at Alta has a sensor on the downhill side of tower 2 that tells the gates when to open. If there is a large space between two chairs, the gates will just stay closed for a longer time.
