So they build a new bridge - do you HAVE to drive across it to check it out? The bigger/longer the better - a must!

Have you rode a Single, Double, Triple, Quad, (Fiver ?) or Six place chair. Maybe this should have been asked in Trivia or as a Poll.

The first and only Single Place chair I rode was at Gunstock NH (60's) - It was for access to the ski jumps, no longer there obviously. The one I wish I had rode (nostalgic) - Single Place'r - wasn't a chair or technically a surface lift, but rather a Ski Mobile Lift (Circa 1938 -1988, didn't run for the entirety). This isn't what many of you are thinking right now but if you like Lift History check out this site and you'll wonder Why? How Come? and What For?

http://teachski.com/articles/cranmoreskimo...eskimopbile.htm

Any guesses on what the uphill capacity was or what took place at the terminals? And to attract the baby boomers would your resort contemplate installing one? Got a circular saw? Enjoy!

Triple: Yes.
Quads: Most of the time.
Fiver: Doesn't exist.
Six: Next season, surely, when I'll go to Orford.

Hey you forgot to list eight-pack. :)

Actually I have never ridden a single or an eight-pack and I don't think there were any five-place lifts built.

And since you brought up the Ski Mobile lift, wasn't there two of those things built? I think there was, but I'm not sure where the other one was located.

Austria and I think Switzerland have the eight-packs. Not sure if they will ever make it over here to North America, probably not for a while.

Never ridden a single. (unless platter lifts count, then one at Alpental, one at White Pass, and two at Copper.)
Too many doubles to list; first ever was old C-5 at Crystal
Same goes for triples; first was C-9 at Crystal.
Quads are everywhere; first one I rode was either the old Midway Shuttle at Crystal or the Pine Marten at Bachelor.
Sixpacks- new C-9 at Crystal, new C-11 at Crystal, B-lift at Copper, and Indy at Breck.

I also thought there was only one Ski-mobile ever built. There were two similar lifts in the Cascades at one time- the Ski-Bob at Milwaukee Ski Bowl (now Hyak) and the steam-powered sledge at Austin Pass (now Mt Baker). The Austin Pass tow had a steam donkey, which for those who aren't familiar with logging history is a steam-driven winch that can pull thousands of pounds without breaking a sweat, pulling a sledge uphill via a rope strung up and around a small sheave. The lift stopped operating when the rope broke and sent the sledge backwards at a high rate of speed.

liftmech - Disney made a movie, set in Colorado not sure if it was filmed here, titled "SnowBall Express" 1972. It was about a resort 'to be'. Their lift was to be powered by a, now that you mentioned it, possibly a "Steam Donkey". The dilemma was how to get the Steam Donkey up the hill and in place to power the tow. I won't spoil the plot in this comedy of errors especially since it's been almost since 1972 since I saw the movie and I COULD be recalling a completely different movie! But I think it was steam powered.

That's one of my brother's favourite movies, actually. I'll have to ask him as I've only seen it once, in grade four.

I remember Snowball Express as well (another Dean Jones classic!), and yes I think they did use a 'steam donkey' as a rope tow. I distinctly recall coming home right after the movie, dragging out my sketchbook, and begin drawing what I thought would be a perfect ski resort - strange since it would be another two years before I would actually start skiing. I guess you could say it planted the seed.

Oh, and to keep things on topic, these are the lifts that I have ridden on.

Singles - 0
Doubles - Too many to count over the years. Only a few this year.
Triples - Ditto
Quads - A lot over the past few years. My first was one of the Yans at Lake Louise.
Six Packs - Only the one at Lake Louise so far.
Gondolas: A couple: Sunshine's, Sulphur Mountain (Banff), Silver Mountain's, and the Queenstown Gondola in New Zealand.
Trams: Jasper Tramway, and Jackson Hole's tram with the original cars.
