The work at Hyak has started this weekend, first with the removal of the Easy Gold double riblet.

I'll have to show Pa this, as he was on the original construction crew.

I think a weekend trip to the mountains in store for this weekend. Between, Hyak, Crystal and White, it will be a busy summer. Where is my camera?

Bill, also keep tabs on my website as myself as well as some of the condo owners will be posting progress photo's there. Yes, it will be a busy summer this year for WA ski areas. I'm really looking forward to checking out the finished White Pass area as well as my backyard, Hyak.

In the next few weeks the old rental shop/ski-for-all/ticket building will be torn down along with the small rental cabin/house thing. The land has not been purchased by the ski resort, but there was a deal made to have those buildings removed which most likely helps with the new lift being installed so there is more room for riders to access the lift at the bottom.

Does anyone know if they are actually going to use parts from the Chair 1 from Crystal? I talked to the engineer who is doing the Hyak relocation at PNSAA and asked him how much of Chair 1 they were planning on using, but he said he didn't know of any parts of that chair that they were planning on using, or needing. Don't know what the real story is, and after all it could be they are taking it out, and haven't bothered mentioning it to him, but at any rate I just was curious.

With the removal of Easy Gold and Keechelus (2 double riblets) I don't see why they would need anything more for the backside lift. Also, Dan Brewster (area manager) said the backside double chair was going to be built from what remained from the Keechelus and the removal of Easy Gold.

If these towers are to be reused, doesn't it seem they would unbolt them rather then torch them down? All of the Easy Gold towers were dropped yesterday.

Saturday evening I decided I had nothing better to do but run up there, and as per my usual I was stupid and forgot my camera. Oh well there wasn't much at Hyak to take pictures of. There's a bunch of rebar in the parking lot, and they've staked out the tower locations as well as the location for the bottom terminal. But there's been little to no dirt work done.

The odd thing I saw was that the bottom of the Dinosaur is still sitting there. Every time I go up there I keep expecting to see it gone, but every time it's still sitting there.

At any rate not much going on yet, it'll be interesting to see when things start really happening, probably still too early for any of this stuff to start.

I suppose we're just so spoiled with all the action at White's Pass that I'm getting impatient for the rest of the construction season to start...

There actually is a lot going on, but mostly on the backside of the mtn getting ready for the double chair install. Removal of the trees, burning them in piles and they have started digging holes getting ready for the forms you saw. They also have started clearing the new trails in Hidden Valley.

FYI, over half of the tower footings have been poured for the Triple chair as well as much trail cutting/tree clearing on the backside in Hidden Valley. Much going on at Hyak.

Any word on the operating schedule for next year? Would be nice if it was open 7 days a week.

I hope they open it more- say Thursday through Sunday, with night skiing. I don't see 7 days/nights any time soon- if ever. West is open much less than that, and even Alpental is still closed on Mondays. Friday-Sunday days only would be my best optimistic guess. It is all about revenue and visits. I hope they can create a draw for the area once again. Bring back Saturday nights until 2:00 AM and watch the party start!

Nights won't happen unless they run new conduit throughout the area. They tore up most of the conduit on purpose or by accident along the upper ridge. I'm sure they will wait to see how popular the area gets before they consider the investment to return night lights.

The forms are not in place yet, but it looks like concrete will be getting poured this week for the upper terminal.

Definitely. I recall a few nights where we left at midnight, dog-tired, and it was still going on. I think my family spent more nights at Hyak than Crystal, even though Crystal was hands-down the closest place.

Chopper is flying this week at Hyak dumping cement. Towers are to be flown around next month.

Why would anyone bury conduit for night lighting? Direct-bury ACWU instead.

Who said the conduit was buried. It was laying on the ground along the side of the ski runs and/or through the trees.
