This is (or rather was) Burnt Hut Spur chairlift at Mt Buller in Australia.

It was zapped by lightning on the 28th of February. As well as burning the lifty's hut, much of the engine and electronics was fried and it would have cost $1.8 million to get it going by the start of the ski season in early June.

So instead, Buller has bought a couple of carpet lifts from a resort in New Zealand as a temporary fix for the coming season and will install a new fixed grip Dopp quad that goes further up the hill for the 2011 ski season.

Burnt Hut Spur triple chairlift dates from 1980, so it was getting a bit old anyway. It serviced a sunny north facing beginners run. Because it faced north, they put in a fair bit of snow making equipment to ensure it would retain snow in spring. The area was named after a basic wooden ski hut that burnt down some time in the 1920's or 30's.

Mt Buller installed the world's first ever Doppelmayr chairlift in 1964 and has been pretty brand loyal to them since. At the moment they have 20 Dopp lifts and only 2 Poma lifts.

Press release on the replacement lift.

Kind of sad to see a lift zapped like that, but it does beg the question of were they jinxing fate by calling it that?

I suppose the good news is it won't happen again (at least to that life) cause lightning never strikes the same twice right?

Something like the story at Mt Buller happened in Switzerland two years ago.

A Chairlift with the Name "Fallboden" (which is translated as "to fall to the ground") crashed during a storm. Unfortunately one man died :(

Here you can see a picture of the chairlift after it crashed: http://sc.tagesanzei.../321/329005.jpg

Today, the lift is back in operation: http://www.jacomet.c...lbum=59&pos=162

The original pic I linked to has gone, so here are couple of others.

For unknown reasons, the proposed Burnt Hut Dopp fixed grip quad will not be installed over the 2010/2011 summer. So it's likely that the carpets that were relocated from a New Zealand resort for the 2010 season will be used for another year.
