Power outage reported at Alta, Brighton
April 2nd, 2010 @ 12:27pm
SALT LAKE COUNTY -- A power outage knocked out service to more than 300 customers Friday, including two ski resorts.

Alta and Brighton both reported their power went out shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Brighton says it is now operating three lifts on auxiliary power and is offering refunds to skiers who request them.

Alta says it has now restored power to two lifts and is working on three more.

It is unknown when full power will be restored or what caused the outage.

Hi guys,

do some lifts have back up battery power or generator?

Aerial lifts must have an engine, either gas or diesel, for evacuation. Evac engines aren't powerful enough to run the lift at full speed so they can't be used for normal skiing operations. Some lifts also have a second back-up engine (or a more powerful first back-up) for normal operating speed during power failures. The back up engines don't generate power for the electric motor, they move the lift directly. I hear back-up electrical generators are more common in Europe.

Power outage reported at Alta, Brighton
April 2nd, 2010 @ 4:36pm

SALT LAKE COUNTY -- A power outage knocked out service to more than 300 customers Friday, including two ski resorts.

Alta and Brighton both reported their power went out shortly after 9:30 a.m. It now has been restored.

Shortly after the outage, Brighton operated three lifts on auxiliary power but could only load every other chair. They offered refunds to skiers who request them.

The outage was caused by an equipment failure. Eighteen customers in Little Cottonwood Canyon were without power. Rocky Mountain Power got everything up and running again by the afternoon.

The Centennial Express at Beaver Creek i am gussing has a full power back up diesel because it was down shortly after opening a few weeks ago, but resumed normal operations with only a slight speed reduction. The diesel engine could be clearly heard at the top and the smoke was black as night when the lift started after a normal stop.
