This rope hoist was used in construction projects from the Italian Renaissance period of 1430. In this time period a number of architects have documented construction practices with text and drawings.
This image shows:
-An endless rope system
-Enclosed gearing
-Drive spool that has numerous wraps of rope indicating the knowledge of friction and tension interaction
-Input coupling
-Rounded gear teeth on the output gear indicating a need to reduce friction,
-Rounded teeth from wear…beginnings of modern tooth profile
-Two guide rollers (sheaves) to properly direct the rope to and from the drive spool.
