Only visited there once, late april'98ish. Lots of snow still, several areas were still open. I am sure Squaw and maybe a couple others would still be open in E May. Renos less than 2 hours to most Tahoe areas.? We stayed cheaper at one of the casino hotels, one of the better ski trips Ive taken. I'd pack the boots and rent the skis.

As a person who lives in the area, here is the take for skiing in Reno/Tahoe for early May...
Most resorts in the area close the Sunday following the Easter holiday or by mid-April. The few holdouts that are open at this time are almost always Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows (about a 40 minute drive west of Reno), Heavenly Valley (about a 50 minute drive south of Reno) and Mammoth Mountain (about a 2 1/2 hour drive south of Reno).
If it is a heavy snow year and business is still brisk, you can add Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe (a 20 minute drive south of Reno), Northstar-at-Tahoe (a 40 minute drive west of Reno), and Sugar Bowl (a 50 minute drive west of Reno).
Most ski resorts in the area average a 40 minute drive from Reno. The resorts are much closer to town than most people think, plus one can stay even closer to the areas if one gets a room in Truckee, California (for Northstar--10 min, Alpine Meadows--10 min, Squaw Valley--10 min, Sugar Bowl--15 min, and Homewood--20 min); Stateline, Nevada/South Lake Tahoe, California (Heavenly Valley--5 min/gondola access, Sierra-at-Tahoe--20 min, Kirkwood--35 min); Carson City/Minden/Gardnerville, Nevada (Heavenly Valley--20 min, Kirkwood--30 min); and Mammoth (Mammoth Mountain).
I hope this helps.

The last few years have been kinda lame snow years, but usually everyone closes right after easter. Even if there is a lot of snow, the lack of people lead even the bigger resorts to close after that last rush of holiday skiers. Mammoth seems to be the only resort that is really committed to staying open as long as they possibly can, but they are a good 3 hours south of Reno...
