The portal towers don't really have anything to do with it being upgraded from a fixed grip lift. All of Poma's pre-1986 detachable lifts like Summit Express at Winter Park and Siberia Express at Squaw have portal towers for the first compression.

My point was "it can tell you if the lift was built before 1986," much like how Doppelmayr terminals and grips can help determine their age.
