We are considering a zip line installation for next summer... who out there has them? and do you think they are profitable, whats your opinion of them. Do you operate year round, or in summer only?

Snowmass had zip lines but removed them due to low ridership... They operated them year round.

Park City has one that operates in the summer only I think. It's been there for about five years and it seems to be pretty popular

Snowbird also has a Zip Line, albeit a much smaller one than the PCMR one. I don't know any profitability numbers, besides that I know from a friend who worked for Snowbird last summer that they broke even on summer operations as a whole, how much the Zip Line had to do with I don't know however.

Sugarbush put one in and it is popular with the kids. Bromley put in a 1/2 mile long ziprider this year. I am going to ride it next week. I'll report back my findings.

That surprises me.. 1- that they had low ridership and 2- that they removed them.. Were they a racing type zip ride or a canopy tour? After talking to some folks that install them, you can have a few different types.. I am leaning towards a 2.5 hr. ride... it is a crap shoot sometimes trying to find new types of income, especially during the summer months, trying to keep those beds filled up.

2.5 hr zip line ride?

I'm not sure on what type Snowmass had. It was installed just above the old Fanny Hill Unload on that steep section to the right of the chair as u r riding up.

I know that Wildcat installed a dual line zip line a few years ago and it was VERY popular. IIRC the first year you had to make reservations to use it as it was so popular. They have since added another dual line next to it allowing four riders at once. Don't know if it's a year round thing or not, but with the popularity I wouldn't be surprised if it is.
Chairlift n. A transportation system found at most ski areas in which a series of chairs suspended from a cable rapidly conveys anywhere from one to eight skiers from the front of one line to the back of another.

I did this one a couple years ago;

http://www.stmaarten...FarmZipLine.htm

It took about 3 hrs and was worth every penny. It was too much fun! If I remember correctly there were around 40 stations you hit through the tree farm. Most were around 20' off the ground and not all were zip. Swinging through air, walking across rope bridges, and so on.

Hi all - new guy here.. I think Heavenly installed a zipline a couple years ago, looks like fun but I've never tried it. I think it was $5 or $8 a run... I'm there to ski though. Dave

Correction: $40 per ride. No wonder I never saw anyone using it.

SAM has a video on their web site of the heavenly Zipline. You need a reservation three days out in the summer to get a ride on it according to this video.

SAM also had a really interesting article in the last issue about various summer revenue sources including Zip Lines. That might be interesting and helpful...

It's entitled "Reinventing Summer" and is unavailable unless you subscribe it appears. Good article though...

There is one in Whistler that a private company operates at the base of the mountains. It runs year round and is a license to print money. It's always busy and costs $100. http://www.ziptrek.com

In addition to the Wildcat Zipline, there are others in NH. Bretton Woods does a 3 hour canopy tour, and another "adventure" company does Ziplines on private land. From what I hear, Bretton Woods is popular, and I know that Wildcat is too.
