Hello,

I recently stumbled upon this website, and I love looking around… I don't really work in the industry, but I have a love for all things related to skiing and mountains in general!

For years I have been looking to score an old chairlift (from reading here, it appears "carrier" is the proper term to describe the individual chairs from a lift), to put up in the backyard or on the deck as a type of swing.

I would guess an older (light-weight) double chair would be best suited for this. Where could find one of these (preferably close by) and what kind of cost is usually associated with this type of hardware?

Oh, by the way, I'm on Vancouver Island, BC Canada.

This might be putting the horse before the cart, but if anyone here has done a similar type chairlift swing project, how did you do it? I'd love to see pictures and descriptions of how you rigged it up.

Thanks for the help,

Z

Z,

Snoqualmie Summit just took out two lifts up at Hyak and if I remember correctly was selling off each individual chair off the old Dinosaur lift. Can't remember for how much, but you could contact them and find out. They're only a little bit outside of Seattle so you'd be a ferry ride and an hour drive away from picking it up.

EDIT:

I found the information on it that got posted here by Hyak.net

Details for general public:

What: Dinosaur chairs, 10’ long X 3.5’ wide X 2’ deep

Cost: $100, payable in cash or check day of pick-up

Date: Sunday, May 3rd

Times: 10:00 – 2:00

Where: Base of Hyak. Drive in through main lot towards the Old Milwaukee Lodge where a couple employees will help load the chair

I don't know if they still have some left, or if they all got scrapped but it'd probably be worth a shot calling them.

I have a friend who runs a cafe and bar at the small Mt Baw Baw ski resort in Victoria, Australia.

In winter the resort used to be accessed by a chairlift because "the powers that be" wouldn't clear the road from the point where the snow gets deep in winter. About 15 years ago, they started clearing snow from the road right up to the village. While the access chair also served a popular ski run, the snow wasn't reliable at the bottom and without the extra customers, the chairlift wasn't economically viable, so it was closed and removed.

My friend bought some of the old chairs and installed them as seating on the outside deck of his bar /cafe. They are enormously popular and have been useful in distinguishing his place from the competition and increasing it's popularity.

P.S. I love the photos on CH3skier's link. There are a hundred uses for old chairs. :)

Mt. Hood Ski Bowl might still have some Riblet center pole double carriers for sale.

Might be some old Yan doubles kicking around Whistler Blackcomb. I'll ask.

Hey Aussierob,

If you could check that would be awesome! I usually make the trip over to W/B a couple times a year anyway... I'd make a special trip to pick-up a chair.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Z

FYI, the Dino chairs sold out during the pre-sale to locals in a few hrs so the general public never even had a chance at them. I was able to snag one and the locals price was a bargain at $75 each. Some people bought 6 or 8 chairs at a time, most likely to re-sell is my guess. I haven't seen any go back on sale though, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some show up this fall on craigslist.

Wow, I'm a bit surprised they went that fast, but then again they weren't very expensive so...

Hyak, do you know if they're going to just use the old Riblet they took down as parts or what exactly?

The Keechelus riblet double is suppose to be used on the backside of Hyak (Hidden Valley). Since they delayed the install of the triple chair on the front side, who knows about the backside? I would be very surprised if the riblet was installed next season. I'd guess the triple will be done next year then the riblet install will depend on how crowded the area gets, but the ski area did purchase more property in Hidden Valley last year which is a good sign. Wait and see I guess.
