The replacement cable for the Cannon Aerial Tramway arrived a couple of weeks ago. The project is supposed to start around April 1, and I hope I can get some cool pics of it.

Just out of curiosity what is the size of the rope (diameter and length)
Also what is the weight of the two spools, was it put on two spools for weight reasons or other?

I took pics of the spec sheets on the spools, but can't read the writing on them. I will find out and pass the info along. As far as two spools, I'm not sure why, but I suppose it means two splices as well. The last time this was done was in 1987, apparently.

Ah, so that's what those big spools under the tram dock were. I assume they're replacing the haul rope and not the track ropes?

Garth, do you have any updates on the Cannon Tram project?

I stopped by the Tram and checked out the spools but what I saw left me with more questions.

The larger spool contains just over 6000' of 32mm rope (not sure what kind)
The other spool contains just under 6200' of 36mm rope (ditto)

The Tram is about 5400' slope length so 6000' spools seems right for track ropes but for only half the lift. If they were for the haul rope I'd expect the same diameter.

Look forward to seeing the pics
If it has vertical, put a lift up it.

At Keystone, the Ruby lift had a Fatzer rope that needed to be respliced every year do to stretch. It would break a wire a couple of times a month and was finally replaced with another brand of rope with only ~8000 hours on it.
Anything is possible when you don't understand what you are talking about.

Sorry, I haven't had the time to get any more info, but the project has been pushed back to April 21. They are replacing the haul rope, and slipping the track ropes a couple of feet to change where they wear. The info on the spools had them shipped to Dopplemayr CTEC, so I guess they're doing the work, which is the norm for Cannon.

I got talking tram ropes with some of my co-workers today and we believe that a jig-back tram can use two different diameter haul ropes since the rope are socket-ed to the tram carriages instead of spliced together. We're just not sure which rope needs the larger diameter: the uphill one for strength or the downhill one for drive bullwheel friction (perhaps?)

Does anyone know?

I'm not a Jigback guy, but if you read the specs here you will find a haul rope and a tail rope. One does the work, the other ties the clothesline together.

Mike is right. I talked to one of the lift mechanics the other day, and there will be no splices involved, as the two cables end at each of the cars. They will be slipping the track ropes 45 feet as well.

My guess would be that the larger rope would be the drive rope since most of the strain is on the track ropes and the haul rope just pulls the cars along.
