Golden avalanche kills two skiers
By Staff Reporter, The ProvinceMarch 7, 2009 5:31 PMBe the first to post a comment
Two skiers were swept away in an avalanche just north of Golden's Kicking Horse Mountain Resort Saturday afternoon.
RCMP received a call at about 2:23 p.m. that the avalanche had occurred.
Five minutes later resort safety personnel and Golden Search and Rescue determined that the avalanche had been triggered by four skiers, two of whom were reported missing.
Shortly before 3 p.m. one skier was found and uncovered by searchers, and the second was found and uncovered about five minutes later.
Both skiers were flown by helicopter to Golden District Hospital, where they were declared dead.
The resort says the avalanche occurred in "a permanent avalanche closure, within the controlled recreation area" of the resort.
According to the Canadian Avalanche Centre, the avalanche risk for the area is considerable, meaning that natural avalanches are possible and human-triggered avalanches probable. A travel advisory posted to the centre's website Friday stated, "Conditions are primed for human-triggering and therefore recreational avalanche incidents."
RCMP are investigating, but no one could be reached for comment
