Ski Chairlift Cable Snaps Injuring 17 People
Monday, March 02, 2009
MADRID — A Spanish official says 17 people were slightly injured when a cable of a ski chairlift snapped in the southern Sierra Nevada ski resort.
An Interior Ministry spokeswoman says the injured, all adults, were in cable chairs that fell several meters to the ground in the accident Monday.
The official says the injured have been treated mostly for cuts and bruises at a medical center in the small town of Pradollano. She says none needs to be admitted to hospital.
Spanish National Radio says snow on the ground cushioned the fall.
The official was speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with ministry regulations.

The media is horrendous at accurately reporting these types of incidents, although it appears CNN did get it right.
MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- A chairlift broke on Monday morning, sending skiers into the snowy hillside at a ski resort in southern Spain, according to the Sierra Nevada resort.
At least 23 skiers riding the lift were injured, the resort said on its Web site.
The resort, near the city of Granada, said the problem stemmed from a hanging arm-type device, which connects the lift chairs to the cable.
CNN partner station CNN+ reported that the device broke, causing the skiers to fall six to eight meters (19 to 25 feet) to the ground.
The skiers suffered fractures and contusions, although it was unclear how many were taken to hospitals. Four were listed in serious condition, CNN+ reported from the scene.
None of the injuries was considered life threatening, the resort said in the brief statement about the incident posted on its Web site.

Six of the chairs plummeted to the slope below after a vibrating cable jerked screws out of one of the lift's pillars at the ski station in the southern region of Andalusia.
Two skiers were taken to hospital with minor chest injuries and at least 21 suffered cuts and bruises and were treated for shock after falling from heights of up to 26 feet.
At least another 35 people had to be rescued from chairs on the lift after it ground to a halt in the mountains above Granada.
A ski instructor who was on the lift at the time and witnessed chairs in front of him plunging to the slope below described the scene as "terrifying".
"I saw the lifts ahead fall into the snow with people colliding and bouncing around below. It was terrifying," said Joao Paulo Do Santos.
"People were very frightened and there was lots of shouting. When the lift stopped some skiers jumped from their chairs into the snow below."
Recent snowfall had served to cushion the blow and saved many from serious injury. "Fresh snow beneath the lift no doubt cushioned the fall," said Mariano Gutierrez, a spokesman from the Sierra Nevada National Park.
Cetursa, the company that manages the ski resort, has opened an investigation into the incident with the skilift servicing a slope for beginners in the Borreguiles resort.
A company spokesman said that initial reports indicated the lift had suffered a mechanical problem and the incident had not been caused by weather conditions. Some, but not all, of the resort had been closed earlier because of high winds.

Pure speculation, but it looks like it could have been a similar setup to the downhill side of this tower, where the weld between the two crossarm pieces failed.

Those chairs seem to be pretty close together. Is this a pulse lift?
Chairlift n. A transportation system found at most ski areas in which a series of chairs suspended from a cable rapidly conveys anywhere from one to eight skiers from the front of one line to the back of another.
