Today I attended a lecture on global warming, from a climatologist who does his research at the same place I pull all my climate data from. He argued that the earth is warming, humans are most likely having an impact, and the problem is serious. His argument was very persuasive.

It's hard to be told things you don't want to believe. But in the end, I am reminded, what you want to believe really doesn't matter. I am also reminded that the real global warming debate is not among the people (i.e. news agencies, politicians and skiers), but it's between members of the relevant science community, whose expertise it is to understand the subject.

The best thing I got out of the lecture was this: I shouldn't be forming an opinion on the subject (becoming an advocate outside my field), because my opinion doesn't matter. Instead, I should rely on the opinion of the relevant scientists. In the mean time, I should focus on my field: the science of finance and economics, which is something I do understand.
