Ski employee injured during avalanche control

A Snowbasin employee who was injured while doing avalanche control at the ski resort will go into surgery Friday and should fully recover, mountain manager Mike Jenkins said.

On Monday, Tim Beaman, 57, was using a technique called ski cutting, or intentionally triggering small slides, during windy conditions near the top of the Huntsville resort's Strawberry Express Lift.

At about 11:15 a.m., a slide carried Beaman into a rock. He was hurt on the thigh and lower back and taken to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

The rock was exposed, but far downhill from where the avalanche started, Jenkins said.

Beaman is a seasonal snow-safety and ski patrol employee with nearly 30 years experience, Jenkins said. He is from Vermont, but living in Utah for the season.
