I was at blue mountain today doing a product demo, and their lift ops guy showed me a video taken by a bunch of overseeing organizations, and sponsored by doppelmayr, poma, yan and a few other people. Basically, they tested an old 63 riblet to complete destruction.
They tested trees falling on the lift line, trees falling on a moving lift line, reverse operation with fully loaded chairs and E-brake failure and a whole bunch of other stuff.
During the reverse operation, the loads (simulating people) were thrown like 120 feet and it finally stopped when a chair was thrown into the bull wheel, destroying the chair and stopping the lift.
They also simulated a fire in the control house (wooden hut) and what would happen if it couldnt be extinguished. After 15 minutes the fire had spread enough to snap the cable. The chairs between the first few towers went flying everywhere. I think after tower 8 however, they stayed on the lift.
