One Man Killed in Jackson Hole Resort Avalanche

One Man Killed in Jackson Hole Resort Avalanche

By Aman Chabra, Local News 8 Reporter

One man was killed in an avalanche inside the Jackson Hole Resort Saturday afternoon.

Teton Sheriff's Deputies identify the victim as 31 year-old David Nodine of Wilson, Wyoming.

Around 1:25 PM, resort officials say Nodine was snowboarding with a friend down the "Paintbrush" run on the upper mountain when the slope gave way.

The resort released the following press release:

"...they exited an expert trail named Paintbrush. The two were then witnessed
landing safely below a cliff, but shortly afterwards the slope they were on
failed. Both skiers were swept down a path of snow until it stopped
approximately 200 yards below. One skier was uninjured, the other was
buried" the press release says.

"The incident was witnessed by two JHMR Ski Patrol who immediately went to
the site and started a search. Approximately six minutes after the incident
the transceiver on the buried victim was located and the victim was quickly
uncovered. Despite efforts by JHMR Ski Patrol the skier remained
unresponsive. He was then transported to Teton Village Clinic where he was
pronounced dead. Cause of death is unknown at this time."

Resort President Jerry Blann released the following statement: "We are extremely saddened by this accident and send our thoughts and
prayers to the victim's family and friends. The Tetons have been
experiencing severe mountain weather since December 21st, with over five
feet of snow falling in a very short period of time. The area of the
incident was subject to avalanche reduction work this morning and the route
had been skied prior. It appears despite these efforts, there was a weak
pocket at the trigger point. The accident site was fully investigated."

Isn't this the area that East Ridge is supposed to be relocated to from the bottom of Thunder to the lodge?

Sad news for the resort. It's a miracle that no one was killed.

The Feb. of '86 slide would have cleared most anything off of Lupine Meadows.

It ran down to just about the top of the Union Pass lift.

Check out the slide at Alta. The location is East Greeley Bowl, the camera is at the bottom of the Sugarloaf lift.

To the locals over there in Jackson,
On a Idaho Falls t. v’ s station web site, in the comment section of the story of the latest slide,
Some one who claims to be from Jackson, says that JHMR Management and the local Sheriff have ordered Jacksonhole local websites not to post photos of the slide and the damage it did.
Is there any truth to this?

Scroll to the end of story, where it says comments, and read what some one is posting.

Sure would like to know how the sheriff can censor the WORLD WIDE WEB.

The TetonAT web site is owned by a Search and Rescue squad member. The pics were taken immediately after the slide and, IMHO, before a total sweep was done for victims. Again, JMHO, so the SAR guy was somewhat out of line since a Reporter or other Civilian would have NOT been permitted on site.

The SAR guy respects the privacy of the Resort and wants to keep his job with SAR, which is managed by the Sheriff's Office.
Wanna read "smack" about the incident? Go to TGR's site and read what some of the maggots have to say. Unbelievable!
Some are supportive, though......

JHMR's Ski Patrol is doing the right things, IMNSHO.

Carl
PS The slide that trashed the building was set off by an Ex-Snowmaker! Once again, the Snowmakers cause all the trouble.

Read Jimmi's post- no-one was hurt. I believe you're referring to the other slide that happened up there recently.

Yo, Carl IS an Old Snowmaker. All the years I've worked at Ski Hills (since '70) it seems the Snowmakers get blamed for
lots of stuff that goes "south". Not always their fault but, sometimes it is.

In the particular incident at JH in this thread one of MY BEST OF ALL TIME WORKERS was the guy that "lit" the 4lb. "Boo Bomb".
It cleaned out the "hang fire" slabs present on the Headwall and ol' man gravity did the rest. I'm sure I'm the only person
who said that Snowmakers were involved with the incident. The comment was definitely "tongue in cheek".

Carl I did not mean to offend anyone. If it was not for the Snowmakers we would not be able to turn the lifts so early in the season.
