Hmm...at Sunday River we have a 1992 Competition 1100 that has a max design speed of 800 fpm.

Could have been specified that way by Sunday River. The longer terminal gives you smoother accel / decel and since the lift is just over 3000' they probably didn't want a sub 3 minute ride time.

Avoid overcrowding on the trails, yeah.

I've never quite understood why at Vail the Sourdough Express is operated at 1,000 fpm considering the short distance of the lift and the terrain serviced (most of the trails lapped are beginner runs, even though most people who use the lift are transitioning to Two Elk Lodge and the China Bowl). I'd think Vail would operate the lift at 900 fpm without lengthening the ride time too much. The three minute ride feels like overkill at times, considering that the lift has the shorter terminals that cause rougher accel/decel.

Vail put in the Sourdough EXP due to all the beginners. If the crew is doing there job the lift will never stop... Unless like on a non HS lift.

I guess that can quell anyone who believes a HSQ there is like overkill.
