It sounds like the owners have some ambitious plans for Homewood for the near future. Check it out: Homewood Resort Master Plan
As with any business that wants to increase revenue and profits, the plans are understandable. I doubt with the economy the way it is at this time that this will actually happen.
What is sad is that this change will take the "home" feeling away from the resort; which makes Homewood a favorite among locals.

It's still gonna be tough for that resort to get any larger. When you have to pass Squaw, Northstar, and Alpine to the North, and are close to Heavenly, Sierra, and the Wood to the South, how do you compete? I love Homewood for weekday dumps, cuz nobody goes and it never gets tracked out, but if they slap a giant lodge there, that will deter me from the drive. .02

They can do what they want to try to draw the "world class" vibe or whatever it is that they are after, but everyone that I ever talked to who was going there who actually planned to, not just decided to because the wind had everyplace else on hold, was going there to escape the crowds and the resort feel.
It really is the same reason that people ski Loveland, Eldora, or A Basin when Breck, Keystone, Copper, etc are all just up the road. (Or the reason that they don't).

FEDERAL LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST HOMEWOOD EXPANSION
January 9, 2012
SAM Magazine--According to published reports, a federal lawsuit was filed late last week against Homewood Mountain Resort, Calif., by The Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore. The suit was filed against the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Placer County for approving, in their words, "an ill-conceived, inadequately studied, and environmentally-disruptive development." The plaintiffs further stated that such a development would lead to air and lake pollution.
JMA Ventures, which owns the resort, announced the approval of its $250 million project in mid-December, by TARPA. For more on the project, check out

HOMEWOOD GETS NOD FOR BIG EXPANSION
December 16, 2011
SAM Magazine--December 16, 2011--Homewood Mountain Resort, Calif., got approval of its redevelopment plan by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on December 14. Homewood, which is owned by JMA Ventures, a minority investor in Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley, will undergo a transformation to an "upscale boutique resort" with a five-star hotel, ski chalets and an alpine village, reported the Sacramento Bee.
The TRPA OKed the first phase of the $500 million project, which will begin in 2014, and paves the way for a 75-room hotel and a village, including an ice rink that becomes a miniature golf course in the summer, and retail outlets.
Eventually, the 1,200-acre resort will offer condominiums, housing, faster lifts, bike trails and boating facilities.
To mitigate environmental concerns, the resort will provide an erosion control plan to prevent sediment from entering the lake, as well as shuttle services to relieve traffic congestion.
