Hi all. Sorry if this has been asked but I didn't find anything on it. Just a few questions.

1) On rotating trams, what turns the cabin? Is there some sort of motor in/on the cabin? How is it powered? I may be wrong but it seems like a hydraulic generator hooked to the track ropes could supply a hydraulic motor on the cabin. The cabin would only rotate while ascending/descending. This would just have a continuous loop of oil.

2) What are the boxes on the uphill side of tram carriages? It looks like a couple sheaves live under there. Is this where the track rope brakes reside? Are they spring powered?

3) Are haul cables wrapped around a central sheave on non-rescue ropeway equipped trams? Can the brakes be used to descend?

4) On trams with a rescue loop installed, is there just a simple carriage the maintenance/rescue crew attaches to it? Are the haul ropes clamped to the carriage in these instances?

The Palm Springs tram has Rotating cabins, though I have to admit, I don't know exactly their drive mechanism. Your idea of a hydraulic generator running off the movement up/down the track ropes seems novel, but problematic...

Many newer trams have no track brakes, older models, such as the old JH tram had 4 separate hydraulic track brake cylinders.

Haul cables may be ended in sockets/ferrules and pinned or the haul may be continuous and the carriage clamped to the haul. Using brakes to descend is not an option.

4) On trams with a rescue loop installed, is there just a simple carriage the maintenance/rescue crew attaches to it? Are the haul ropes clamped to the carriage in these instances?

[color="#FF0000"]No experience with a separate rescue setup. We lower passengers out the cabins.

I think this is right; Palm springs tram has an electric motor under the cabin that spins the floor, it recharges both at the terminals and by way of a generator on the cabin carriage.

Does that metal box house a generator of sorts? For cabin lighting, or something?
