World's first sauna ski gondola announced in Finland

The world's first sauna ski gondola has been unveiled in Finland. The sauna gondola in the Lappish ski area of Yllas is part of Finland's longest ski lift.

The sauna gondola has been built by construction company Doppelmayr, reports Austrian website vol.at. Finland's unique sauna gondola is part of a two kilometre ski lift, which also boasts a VIP gondola.

The novel invention in the Lapland region of Finland means skiers wanting to warm up can take a 13 minute round trip in the wooden sauna gondola. Visitors change into swimming costumes in the gondola while it's in the main ski station and the cabin is then attached to the main ski lift and sets off.

The gondola is heated via electricty, charging up at the main sauna back in the ski station. Warm clothing and a fire extinguisher are always on board in case of emergencies.

The gondola ski lift is only the second of its kind in Finland, the first being constructed in 2000. It is, however, the first with a sauna attached.

Dude, that's crazy!

However, I would still prefer a swimming pool gondola.

CWA also has a couple other cool cabins. ETHOS AND VIP
Ethos has back to back seating. Never seen that before. The vip is just cool.

The VIP would only be worth it for me if the ride time was over 20 minutes.

Why couldn't they of come up with "Global Cooling"?

Yeah Killington has a few VIP cabins, and, needless to say, they haven't been out of the parking garage in quite some time, now, based on the amount of dust that has collected on them. And, that ride is at least twenty minutes, road to Skye.

Can you say flying limousine?

Also the sauna cabin says it heats itself to 100°C!! :shocking:

Off topic: If the Skyeship is twenty minutes long, then it must have taken the better part of an hour to ride the old gondola.

Yea probably at least a good 45 minutes, especially because it went all the way to Killington Peak, another ~600 ft. vertical and fairly lengthy span.

I'm not sure what the ride times were on the old Killington Gondola (when it went all the way to Killington Peak), but I do know that the average ride time that I have experienced on the gondola was probably a good 15 minutes or so, depending on stops. Though the surprising part about it was that each time that I have experienced a stop on the lift it was usually for a really long time; sometimes a good 3 or 4 minutes.

The Skyeship has an unusual amount of tower trips and I would say that when it does stop it is usually a CPS fault so a mechanic has to go to the tower to check it so it takes a few minutes... especially because of where the towers are located in the lower section.

Only the first two stages of Killington's original gondola are listed in the SAM construction surveys (1968) but using just these numbers: 12,597 feet long at 750 fpm, I got a 16:58 ride. I remember the whole trip taking about 25 minutes the few times I rode it.

If your ride on both stages of the Skye Ship took 20 minutes it must've been running about half speed.

The Scandinavian obsession with saunas has reached new heights in the Lappish ski resort of Ylläs where the world's first ever sauna gondola opened for the 2007/2008 winter season...

Why do I have just the tiniest suspicion that this story is not entirely true?

What is there that couldn't be true? Half naked Scandinavian chicks in a sauna gondola? Sounds like porno for this site. :w00t:

If I recall correctly, that was CWA's invention. And it isn't a joke!
