Indeed. I always like James Niehues' work. Very detailed and yet beautiful.

It's Stoke, as in Revelstoke, not Stroke.

WHY! It looks nice, and all, but there was nothing new to change or re-paint, and James' map was much more...more....James-esque

But didn't they already pay for it? Or do they have to pay the artist year by year?

More then likely yearly. However I have no clue as I have never had to deal with the Trail map duties of a ski area.

Nope, There was an interview a few years ago with James Niehues and he is paid by the painting. The only way he earns additional money off them is selling posters on www.artistictrailmaps.com

Personally, I have come to prefer to computer created trail maps for a few reasons. The primary reason is accuracy. While they still aren't as good as using some sort of Topo/satellite image combination, the painted drawings seemed to leave much more ambiguity in terms of what is where and how trails connected and things just never seemed to connect the same way as they did on the map.

I do, however, still enjoy the painted maps. I have a few in frames (albeit cheap plastic ones from walmart) that are decorating the walls in my apartment, and have decorated the walls of the ski shops that I have worked at over time.

I don't really like the computer generated ones, but at least they look like trail maps. The worst kind are the satellite images. Nothing looks good from there. I have a couple trail maps hanging up in my room, all James Niehues jobs, and even if there might be some ambiguity (which I don't think there is) they are just so much more aesthetically appealing and are a great piece of advertising for the resort

I wondered why they had to pull down all the existing maps from the lift info boards... I thought it was just to paint them.

Here's a link to the new 2009 Trail Map to Hidden Valley Highlands Resort in my hometown of Huntsville, Ontario.

http://www.skihidden...y.on.ca/themap/

The best part about the map is that clicking on the runs launches flash windows with a video of each run. I definitely wasn't expecting a map that nice this year.

Mammoth has their new map up: Mammoth Mountain Trail Map--2008-2009

Rarely used Chair 26 is not on the map. Does anyone know if it was removed last summer?

Okay, I really have to ask, is this for real?? This is by far the worst trail map I have ever seen. I got a poster of this while at the Colorado Snowsports Expo, but I just thought it was just something different for a poster.

I believe okemo's interactive trail map takes the prize for "worst trail map"
