well, good news! I have formatted up all the ski areas. As the site says, don't expect this until August. I will be more busy soon with exams coming up and stuff.

Here's another trail map / wiki site:
www.geosap.org

It's mostly focused on Google Earth and generating statistics, but we have been adding historical trail maps and other info.

Hi everyone, I have finished the basic website structure and am now looking for people who want to add maps. When the site is officially released, everyone will be able to add trail maps and ski areas to the site after they have made a user account for the skiingbc.info/chairliftinfo.com forum.

Is it for any ski area or just in Canada?

It is for any ski area in the world. Currently there are only ski areas listed for North America (kudos to Skier!), but you can add a ski area wherever it is if you like, and add maps for it. Moreover, there are currently about 350 maps, directly imported from Skiingbc.info, so all the maps you see on Skiingbc.info are on the new site already! BC is pretty well covered now. Max map upload size is 10mb, and PDF's, JPG's and GIF's are supported presently, with more formats to be supported if necessary. If you want to add maps now (however many you want), and see the beta website, just post here, and I will get you set up (please sign up for Skiingbc.info forums and tell me your username for that forum if you are interested as well).

If one of the mods sees this: could you change the topic of this thread to something more appropriate like "New Ski Maps website" or something like that? My bad for not starting a new topic all together. The current topic name is probably a bit misleading to less frequent forum users right now.

I have lots of trail maps from France and Austria, and I can get some from other countries later in the year. PM me if you would like some. I don't know where to upload them to, but I just joined virtualskier.net.

UPDATE: The website now has a whooping 1016 ski areas listed under France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Canada and the US! As well there are 273 trail maps on the site, 250+ from BC/Alberta and the last 10 or so from the US.

If you want to add maps to the site, it is getting easier, please check this page out: http://www.skiingbc.info/forum/index.php?t...=189.msg511#new

PS: Look at my competing site: http://www.alpineski...zbuh/winmap.htm
I really hate those websites that just plaster you with ads for the tiny bit of poor quality content they offer.
My site is going to have something called quality, without rediculous ads.

UPDATE: We now have over 1200 maps and over 1050 ski areas on the site, thanks to the diligent efforts of Skier. There is US wide map coverage and decent coverage for Canada. There are also 10 or so maps from Europe, half of them thanks to Skierdude! We still need more maps, so if you have old maps on your computer or want to add current maps, just follow the instructions above!

The site now has over 1640 ski maps and 2000 ski areas. There are always more maps to be added, and if you want to be involved, just send me an email to contact@skiingbc.info and I will get you set up. We are now skimap.org, that will be our permanent domain name. The official site launch day is set for August 1st 2008!

Just to update everyone, the skimap.org site now has 1773 trail maps which range in age from the 1950s to today. I found an incredible collection of a few hundred maps from the 1980s and 90s, and I am in the process of scanning them in. I think the site already exceeds skimaps.com in terms of the quality and quantity of maps. WBSKI is still in the process of programming and finalizing the site design. He is hoping to make it public on August 1st. We have really focused on posting historical and current maps to show the progression of North American ski areas. Once the site is launched, anyone can add their map to the collection. I think you all will be very impressed.

CAUTION TO ALL! I have reported the skimap.org site to their ISP. The site is highly suspicious of being a Phishing site.

You link through from this site (skilifts.org) and then it looks familiar so I thought it was related to Skilifts.org and so entered my login information for this site and it redirected me to a YouTube video. This is HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS!!!

The site should've returned a user unknown message or told you how to register. Redirecting to another site is EXACTLY what a lot of Phishing sites do after they get you.

So I then tried to access the About Us and other pages without logging in again, but there is ZERO information on this site.

If this site is legit and just not ready then it should say so and the login for admin should be a on a hidden page.

There is no good reason why ski maps should be behind a login. You don't actually own the content you're presenting so you should keep it as public as possible.

PS: If anyone is curious you can enter a bogus username / password to see what it does.

This website is not a phishing website. It's owned and operated by our forum member WBSKI with the help of Skier.

WBSKI just has to give you access to login before you can login.

Thank you for the information.

However, I think there is some valuable feedback in my reply. Redirecting to a third-party site after a failed login attempt is STILL a valid reason to be alarmed. They really should fix it and provide some better messaging on how to obtain access or if they want to restrict access they should just say it's a private site.

Egieszl, the site is not finished, that is why it requires a login. It is being made by some teenagers including myself, and not some professional web people so it isn't perfect. There are many users on this site who have asked for a login and seen what is on the site. I have spent hundreds of hours scanning and uploading maps and it would be a shame for you to get it all deleted. WBSKI has done all the code himself so right now it just has some fillers for pages that don't yet exist, like the YouTube page. Please relax.

If you want to get a login and username for the site and be a Beta tester, go to: http://www.skiingbc....x.php?topic=189
The reason everything is behind a login is because the pages and graphics are not complete, not because we are trying to hide anything.

And while we're at it, phishing is when you get to a page that looks like a legitimate page and asks you for information. How is a redirect to a YouTube video phishing?

Hi guys,

I will change that ok, the point is, for the log in to work, you have to be a registered beta tester as said on the forum...
Redirecting to youtube is not exactly phishing!

egieszl: it would be much more responsable of you to talk with me first before you report this site as a phishing site - which it is not. I could have easily changed things to suit your concerns...

The site is not ready yet for public use, and that is why admin have to log in..

By logging in with a bogus password, you are simply getting Rick Rolled (it is a geeky joke)

How this site looks like skilifts.org I have NO idea... It does say SKIMAP.ORG right at the top....

Ok, your concerns have been addressed. I would hope you report back to 1and1 that the phishing report was a false alarm.

I have no ill intents with this website, I just plan to provide skiers with a fantastic ski map resource.

Thanks, from Russell, at Skimap.org, and Skiingbc.info.

I apologize and do retract my comments about the site being a phishing site. After I posted my original message I decided to hold off on sending the e-mail to your ISP, so I saved it to my drafts. The next day after checking this forum again and seeing the response from an admin of this forum I deleted the e-mail. I learned several years ago that some time it is better to sleep on something before actually sending the e-mail. The same is true when at work, maybe you should go for a walk for an hour before responding or addressing a matter that got you upset.

I appreciate your quick response to my feedback. I think the changes you've made add credibility and offer a better explanation to the end user. I hope you can understand why someone like myself may have been concerned with being redirected to a third-party site on a failed login attempt.

I am very interested in your site and may have maps to contribute to your cause. I was an avid ski map collector in the 80's and early 90's.

Thanks for your reconsideration!

The site is nearly ready, but I am going away soon for a while, so the official launch date will remain August 1st 2008.

We have lots of great maps on already, including many hundreds of maps which have never been seen on the internet before!

I think it is safe to say, Skimap.org has the most maps of any ski website online, and maybe even more than Skimaps.com had.
