This is mainly for my fellow mechanics, but anyone who has ridden a snomachine, sled, skidoo, etc., please feel free to comment.
I'm curious what other areas buy and use for their sleds. At Crystal we had Polaris Indy 440s for the mechanics, and an old Yamaha 400 two-seater for lift ops. At Baker everyone had either a Ski-Doo Skandic 500 or 500 Wide. At Copper we've got mostly Skandic 500 Wides, but fortunately the mechanics get Ski-Doo Summit 600s- I've got a new Summit Rev that is a blast to ride (120 km/h last week in a straight stretch of road) and yet still tows my grip trailer back and forth across the hill with no problem.
Anyone else?

Let's see... for us... A Bombi Skandic 440, Yamaha VK III 540, a Yamaha VK II 540 (which I broke two weeks ago, so we're ditching it...) Right now to replace the VKII we have a Bombi Tundra that's pretty old but is a great little machine. The patrol has a Skandic 440. They are all two seaters, and the skandic's are not wide and are pretty tippy at times... I rolled it last week and injured the brake handle ;)

Well here is one of James' rides at DV. He sent me this picture a while back with the pictures of the Carp and Homestake lifts.

Here at Solitude we've been lately the buying Yamaha Venture 600, outfitted with a 2 pass seat, deep track and luggage rack, they are great on the steeps and in deep snow.

Am I guessing right, James, that your ride is a Ski-Doo Grand Touring?

When I was a kid my parents owned two 1971 Yamaha machines, a GP440 and an SL292. They seemed like good rides.
In the 80's I bought a couple used machines, a 1972 Scorpion SuperStinger 440 and an Artic Cat Cheetah 440. The Cheetah was a very fun machine, light, quick and had those metal cleats that they no longer allow. The Scorpion was kinda heavy, would get stuck in deep snow and the track had a tendancy to slip off if you went around a corner to fast.

That's it for me.....

I'm just curious, but I never see any Artic Cat snowmobiles at ski resorts. Are they just too expensive to buy them for their performance?

That's about the size of it. Bombardier (Ski-Doo) has a long history with the ski industry, and builds a solid product for relatively cheap, so many areas use one of their sleds. The are quite a few Polaris Indies out there, as well as Yamaha VKs. The most common industry sled I've seen is Allan's- a Ski-Doo Skandic. They seem to have the best mix of power and carrying capacity (note the backrest that allows for a second passenger, where my Summit can only carry me and my tools.)

Lucky you- we get Ford pickups that the parking crew abuses all winter. Although they're great on cold rainy days, and they do have radios...

My Summit REV 600HO. I guarantee that Bombardier wasn't envisioning it pulling a trailer as if it were a utility sled, but it does quite well.

here's my other sled! A 99 Yamaha VK III 540. I love this sled, it's not tippy at all. BUT it weighs SO much.
