I recently spent two weeks in Austria. One of the great joys of skiing there is the amount and variety of ski lifts you encounter. I found myself riding some lifts just because they are so cool.

At St. Christoph the moving carpet is covered for your comfort.

Down in St. Anton is the new gondola. It loads backwards then is flipped up on a huge conveyor to the line.

Axamer Lizum uses a funicular, which snakes up the mountain at almost an even grade ... and the cars are built to that grade. Two trains start from either end on a single track and pass each other in the exact middle. You can see that middle track here if you look closely.

Scheffau, in the SkiWelt area, has a double quad.

Kitzbuhel has an amazing new gondola with room for 30. The modernity also extends to the gondola station.

Nearby Jochberg, meanwhile, has not changed in decades.

Going also has a funnicular.

And an old bubble double.

Ahh, those photos bring me back to Europe! I remember 4 of those lifts exactly. (Galzigbahn, 3S, and the last 2)
Nice pics!

I've been interested in the new install at St Anton and would enjoy a few more pics of the drive/loading platform, or whateva.

Nice Pics. It's a really cool lift and an awfullyexpensive way to get rid of forty steps. :wacko2:

Well.... in government subsidized ski areas such as Ski Arlburg, price is about the last consideration when purchasing a lift.

It's true, and the irony is that you still have to walk up some stairs when coming from the village

So, essentially vertical bullwheels instead of horizontal...?

The big vertical "ferris wheels" are just to bring the cabins up and down between the two levels. The haul rope arrangement is different at each end of the lift IIRC and is similar to a normal funitel.
