Well I am in Big Sky right now and the gondola had a major derail yesterday. Word from a ski patroller is that it will not run again and will be replaced this summer with a chondola.

Derail = Replacement? Money must be good there!

Any news release or reason why the derailment happened?

I haven't found anything official. The gondola is really old and has needed replacement for awhile now. It runs parallel to a high speed quad and more than half the cabins are off the line on the ground over by the ski patrol building with broken windows. It requires the operators to push the cabins through the terminal too. The person I talked to said Boyne has ordered two chondolas, one for Big Sky and the other for Sunday River. Both are to be installed this summer if the permits come through in time.

I think holy $#!+ is more like it. It derailed on both sides!! I can see why they are replacing it rather than repairing it! :pinch: :shocking:

I see a deropement on ONE side (not Both) of two consecutive compression (holddown) towers. Barring unforseen natural forces (wind, earthquake, etc), I would ASSUME that it was an alignment problem or component failure, which has nothing to do with the age of an installation.
We know what assumption is the mother of...
STRONG work by the cable catcher, and I ain't climbing that ladder!

No, it did also derail on the the heavy side of the uphill tower if you look closely. There were other derails along the line as well.

How did that happen? It looks like a nice day in the picture, maybe it was taken later but that would take a whole lot of wind to mess it up that badly, at more than one place along the line. I hope nobody was in that cabin when it happened

That cabin was headed downhill. However, another cabin was very close that was occupied. It is kind of sad, you can tell which cabins had people by whether the doors are open from the evacuation.

As for cause, I have not heard. This happened on Friday morning, before I arrived in Big Sky. That picture was taken today.

How did that happen is what I want to know. Did the pressure from one derailment cause the other towers to derail or how exactly did it start??

if true, am wondering if this lift usually runs w/summer cabins (50%) and winter cabins (100%)?
