I noticed the down turn first hand when not all lifts would run mid week, it's not the same Bachelor any more. I've skied there since they had all Riblets painted a different color.

What types of improvements would people who ski at Mt. Bachelor like to see? It sounds like the main complaint was lift maintenance issues, but they did replace the Pine Marten lift a couple years ago, so it can't be all bad. Bachelor already has a lot of high speed lifts, two more than PCMR has. Where were they planning to put 9 new lifts and 5 lodges?

I don't know how much the new base lodge at PCMR cost, but I've read before that PCMR is run on a tight budget too. The only lift replacements they've made have been relatively necessary (you can argue about First Time and McConkey's being a six pack, but they had to replace Prospector in 1996, and Payday and Bonanza replaced a 30 year old gondola and a the main triple out of the base). They've certainly had their share of lift-related troubles there too, but they handled them well. From a skier's point of view, I think Powdr has done a good job with Park City without overspending on real estate like their ASC-owned neighbor to the north.

That original master plan sounds a lot like what ASC had in mind for The Canyons when they bought it. Talk is cheap.

The master plan includes a gondola which will run from a new Sun River parking lot to the mountain. It would be very similar to the Village Gondola at Mammoth.

There is the Sun River Express is planned to be installed to the left of the Rainbow lift and above that will be the 7th Heaven Express lift which will run to the top of Mt. Bachelor (This lift will probably never be installed since the Summit Express lift is not used a lot). There were also talks on the Mt. Bachelor blog last year replacing the current Rainbow lift with an express, but it seems kind of pointless since only three runs are located there, but it will make sense when the Sun River Express is installed so people will be able to get over there.

There is also the possibility of expanding on the backside.

The thing that Mt. Bachelor has going for it is that it's close to a large population base so it doesn't have to spend lots of money to bring people to ski there. With Mt. Bachelor being 20 minutes from Bend, the mountain has huge growth potential.

Thet really only replaced Pine Martin because they absolutly had to.... and it was just a replacement of what they already had... a HSQ, not an upgrade to a 6 pack or Gondola..which the mountain could handle and increased capacity out of the base area which they sorely need as well. They did not replace the chairs or the towers...which are the original towers from the fixed yan before the previous HSQ.. it was as minimal of an upgrade and cost as you could get and still state that they had a new lift.
The place just looks shabby now...

To my knowledge, there was never a Yan triple where the current Pine Marten is. The three original Yan triples are Rainbow, Red and Avalanche (Where the current Sunrise Express is).

If not all lifts are turning midweek, the ticket price should reflect that.
Treat employee's better, less imported help.
KEEP THE MOUNTAIN (Butte) OPEN LONGER! Maybe a challenge like Meadows does, have a minimum number they have to hit to keep open.

:pinch: make it steeper :w00t:  bad Mike...BAD

I thought Pine Martin replaced the old "Black Chair" with a different alignment. I recall some old buddies on the LM crew commenting that they had just done a major overhaul on Black the season before they took it out.

The name change from Bachelor Butte to Mt. Bachelor was strictly for marketing purposes. A butte sounds small and dinky to most people.

The entire point of have a glamorous master plan is for negotiation purposes with the Forest Service.

What is ASC?

American Skiing Company, former owners of Killington, Pico, Sugarbush, Sunday River, Mount Snow, Steamboat, Heavenly, Attitash Bear Peak, and maybe others, and now they're down to only The Canyons.

Is it true that Powdr is only opening Pico for weekends? I don't know what kind of crowds they get up there, but that doesn't seem like a good way to keep the locals or anyone else happy.

I work at Mount Snow. We all went through hypnosis to forget the traumatic experience, now I’ll have to go again.

They are not opening Pico on Tues or Weds and yes it has a lot of locals pissed! They also are not opening stage 1 of skyeship on tues or weds and no food in any lodges midweek except ramshead/ snowshed. They are also shortening the season with a planned closing date of aptil 13th.

The reason they had to use old footage of Matt Janney is because he refused to interviewed for this story... great communication, community outreach.

This sounds very much like what happened at Alpine Meadows. The difference at Alpine was that Powdr dropped ticket prices in order to pack more crowds in.

Nick Badami used to own much of the stock in Powder Corp, when they owned only Alpine and Park City. After the company was sold to the Cumming family, he stayed on as Chairman until 2003. As the years went by, more and more of the long-term Alpine employees moved on and things really went downhill. Relatively few significant improvements were made under Powder Corp.

Alpine was sold again this year, and in only six months the new owners have brought back a lot of old employees and have already made noticeable improvements in the level of service.
