Avalanche hits closed area: An avalanche was discovered during a routine sweep in a closed area within Deer Valley Resort Saturday at about 11:15 a.m. The slide occurred on the steep, experts-only Daly Chutes area of the resort.
After ski patrollers and Summit County Search and Rescue personel examined the slide area, Deer Valley representatives said they were confident no one was caught in the slide. The search was called off at 1:40 p.m. According to Deer Valley's Chuck English, it appears a skier may have entered the closed zone and knocked off a piece of the cornice, triggering the slide. Resort spokesperson Erin Grady said patrollers reported seeing one set of skier tracks at the top of the slide.
