Hello,

The main cable on a doppelmayr 1985 highspeed detach is being changed and replaced. How will that change things (other than correct for rope stretch and all that)?

Does it make it smoother going over sheave trains? What about in the terminals?

Or is the only difference really just preventative maintenance without anything the general public could even notice or feel?

The main reason a cable is changed is because it doesn't meet "code" requirements. 2 general reasons are 1) Reduction in diameter 2) Too many broken wires.
I would think that the cable profile would not change from the old rope to the new one, and as such the general public would see / feel no difference from the new cable.

hello,
one consideration is the relationship between the lay length of the rope and the distance between sheave axles: i heard some time ago that the lay length should not be a multiplier of the axle distance. for example, if the sheave axle distance was 36inches and the lay length was 9inches, harmonics could be induced into the rope, causing a "buzzy" ride at some line speeds.

the other consideration is compacted rope, these ropes provide somewhat of a better ride, am told.

rope suppliers are doing their best to reduce initial strech that can result in a loop splice shortly after the install. differing core types and wrapping materials are intended to address this. nothing to do with the public, but who needs a mid-winter loop splice?

during some rc-240 chain break testing (boom!) research at mill valley spicing some years ago, i witnessed a new haul rope being pre-stretched. nice.

i'd confirm the above two concepts i've heard (lay length, compacted rope) by your lift manufacturer and rope supplier. if you ever have the opportunity as i have, speak with fatzer's max bowman. very friendly, huge knowledge about various rope specs and their interaction with HS lifts.

of course if a management team shops for the cheapest rope, regardless of lay length and without asking your lift manufacturer for their recommendations, the ride could be made worse.
