I don't know anything about national weather patterns and all that but the last time Florida had a severe drought in 1998-99 was a bad snow year for Utah, at least until March

think positive! Good and bad seasons seem to run in cycles here. One year will be dry, and the next will be good.

This topic always come up at ski areas as August fades. Bets are placed and fortunes lost.

Ya' know what? No one can predict the weather (with any accuracy) above 10,000 feet. You might as well stake your livelihood on old wive's tales.

There are a lot of old wives at ski resorts - most of them with incorrect plumbing.

98-99 was the record year in WA with most all resorts getting between 500"-1200".

our best year at Dodge Ridge when I worked there was '04-05. We opened on Halloween (the earliest in the history of the resort) and closed two weeks shy of a 6-month season. We got seven to ten feet in one week.

They could have easily been open for more then 6 months in 1999 with plenty of snow at Alpental into July. I even boarded the face of Hyak in June!

This photo was hiking Alpental on memorial day weekend in '99 and as you can see, not even a hint of thin snow.

It snowed a bit at Brian Head this morning.
Take that for whatever you think it's worth.

Dodge had a lot of snow but there were several days when we didn't even sell enough lift tickets to pay the electric bill to run one chair! :crying: I was sad to see us close with sooo much snow on the ground. But you know how it gets anywhere when business is slow!

we've had some afternoon thunderstorms here. And the squirrels are starting to get fat. They fatten up before winter.

In a good year, they make such a great Thanksgiving stew. The extra fat enhances the gravy.

Why did they close Alpental so early if there was plenty of snow? The last two years they have streched the season to the fullest.

$$$$$$$ At the later times in the season after spring breaks the vast majority of skiers are pass holders and very few tickets are sold so unless they have a good reason to remain open most resorts will stick to their previously announced end of the season especially since many seasoal workers are completing their employment as well.
