Although the paper map is probably fine, the pdf upload is a joke. Especially the blue sky area is hardly readable.

I did nottice one odd change on the map, the surface lift that connected 17 and 36 to two elk resturant is gone. Maybe the idea is people will ski down to the new sourdough (14) lift to get to two elk? I'm not sure if the new 14 has the same path as the old, but there was a good ways from the old top of 14 to two elk. Anyone have any insight?

I believe they moved the new 14 line so that you don't need the surface lifts! They got everything sorted out up there so you can ski right from the top of lift 14 to Two Elk.

They did realign the new sourdough so that it is closer to the Two Elk lodge. But the West Wall poma was never for access from sourdough to Two Elk. That was just a moderate length skate to get to the lodge, which while annoying was not that bad. I personaly am dissapointed that West Wall has aparently been removed, I frequently ski off of Sun Up and Tea Cup and always go to Two Elk for lunch and as the map reads it will now be a requirement to ski to the bottom of Sourdough to get back to Two Elk or go for a long skate.

Wow that is terrible, they did go for accuracy though, including my house!

That's really bad. Even James Niehues said it was bad. And he's pretty much the source on these kind of things. He didn't do their previous maps, but I always thought Breck had some of the best looking maps for the last few years. That new one looks like the ones we do in Terragen, but not as nice. The Steamboat and Vail computer maps are bad, but at least they still look like trail maps. Having the Chair 6 inset on the old maps wasn't the end of the world.

I wouldn't say that's bad. It's great at showing actual terrain. Maybe if they made the satelite imaging a little more visually appealing, more people would go for it. Overall, it's a good map. It's just different. I really don't like how the trees in the village are different than the ones on the mountain.

That looks like it is multiple maps put together in photoshop.

When will we start seeing this kind of thing used instead of modeling and painting?

It's been done by a few places here in Minnesota. I am not sure which areas, but several have used aerial pictures with their runs and lifts marked on it. Those maps look nice, and give you a really good idea of the landscape. However, I don't think the big resorts, especially in Colorado could do that. I think it would not be "professional" enough for them.

In my opinion, it would be more professional in a lot of cases. So many trail maps are misleading. Runs that connect certain areas don't look like it is possible. One that I think of in particular is Heavenly's Upper Nevada side area. On the trail map, the Tamarack lift appears to be above the Comet lift, but in reality, you shoot right over onto the Orion Run off of the Dipper lift. It looks like you could go to the top of the Comet Lift from the top of the Dipper Lift doesn't really happen either. Granted Heavenly has unusual contours compared to a lot of places, but I have a snow visual picture of it and it is easier to see how things actually are. A few lines and some arrows (which they already use) and it could be much more user friendly.

That just comes to mind because I explained it a lot last year when I was working in a rental shop in town. People would look at the map and go "how do I get to here?"

I would think resorts would like that aspect though. James Niehues can make the places look more beautiful and appealing than they really are. Sometimes realism isn't the most impressive and appealing.
