I like to fill in the sex box with "YES".

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this.

I have found that when I worked for Six Flags Elitch Gardens there were 3 female techs and 10 or so male techs. The 3 female techs could fix shit so quick that it put "us" to shame.

I have 100% respect for any "girl" that loves to get dirty and get a job done quick and correctly. Unlike how "we" men do hack / rush jobs sometimes to get a ride / lift running again.

I expect that I will be getting bashed for this but whatever.

 I love getting dirty! I put a few men to shame this summer throwing rafts off the trucks!

in three weeks I'll be taking the written test for a commercial drivers license. Then I gotta get some behind-the-wheel time so I can take the DMV road test.

I believe the reason that there are so few girls in the lift maintence industry is that it is by societies definition a "manly" job and looked down upon if women go into it. IMHO the person who can do the job the best should be the person doing it but because of societies prejudices it is so often the men who end up in the field. If it were more "acceptable" to society I think a lot more women would go into it instead of sticking to the female-centric jobs such as secretary, teacher, etc.
Where I worked there was a female lift maintence tech and she could do the job just as good and/or better then the men that were there and a hell of a lot better to have a conversation with. Prejudices be gone I just want the best person fixing the lift that I am on that particular day, man or woman!

I agree with ya, skisox! This summer with rafting I had some old codger tell me she didn't think it was 'appropriate' that I was a truck driver  I 'should've' been a cashier. Whatever............. Old-fashion-types crack me up!

Well you have to understand thats how it was back then. Women didn't do any thing like that but now everything has changed.

Does this mean that we no longer are expected to open doors for them and it's OK to fart loudly?

Your reference to “cleaning showers” reminded me of an episode at Lift Engineering, many years ago.

Janek was always “exporting” people out of communist-controlled Poland – in fact, a goodly percentage of the workers at his factory were brand new Americans of Polish heritage. For the rest of us, it was an education.

It happened that Slavco, a friend of Jan’s from Zakopane, was flying in to Reno from West Berlin. He was promised that Jan would get him started in his new life here in the States. But it was the dead of winter, and the Reno airport had been snowed-in – forcing his plane to land in Salt Lake. He called Janek.

“Slavco – you are finally here”

“No, Janek, I am in de Salt Lake. Plane cannot fly to frozen Reno”

“Don’t worry, Slavco, we can fix this. Just you go to ze Hertz car rental counter and tell zem zat Jan send you. I will make arrangement for car. You drive on route 80 west and get off at ze Reno exit and I meet you there in eight hour from now.”

Slavco does not show up on schedule. In fact, it is a full two days before he again dials Janek’s number.

“Slavco – what is happen? Where are you?”

“I am in Reno, Janek, waiting for you to show me ze way to Carson City.”

“Ya – but why so long is your trip?”

“Well, I get onto ze highway and drive a little mile when I see de exit sign which say: CLEAN RESTROOMS.”

Ya – and you stop there?

“Ya – I stop there.”

“And you stay there all this time?”

“No, Janek, I did not. But do you know how many restrooms there are between Salt Lake and Reno?” I can now say zat they are now all clean.”

my job the last three months has been cleaning showerhouses here. After vacation I'll be working at the ice rink until Badger opens. After Badger closes I hope to get a better job until rafting season.

What the old saying do what you gotta do to do what you love! At Killington I remember many a day weed whacking portals in the fall, making beds at the grand hotel and driving old people around to look at the x-mas lights when there wasn't enough to do in the actual lifts department to keep us all employed year round!

that's why I'm working on getting a Class A CDL. I've been told my strong points are driving trucks and running skilifts.

In context, I meant that the gender of an individual has little bearing on what one is capable of.
I'm still pissed that in the member details I can only choose Male or Female where it says sex. I wanted sex to show the same as I fill out all other forms........... "Tuesdays"

I don't mind having fun poked at me !

 You're a good sport, Mike!

being a girl in lift maintenace is all about attitude. I have had to outlast 3 guys to get where I am now, only one of which was anywhere near as competent as I am. You just have to get out there and show you can kick ass with everyone else. I think the advantage is that if you have to fight to get something you are much more likely to do the best job that you can to stay in that position. A few of the guys i have worked with over the years have been handed the job because the assumption is that they are guys, so they are going to be more mechanically inclined or whatever bullshit, but they ended up being lousy employees that we had to fire because they just assumed they were entitled to the job and didn't work to hard to keep it. Luckily I work with a couple of awesome guys who see the facts and don't care who gets the job done, as long as it is done right and safe.

So - does that mean that you "try weelky"... or "try weakly"?

That was my night off, in the hunter / gatherer years. I've always spelt weelky........weekly.

More power to ya'!

I see a lot of what you mention - the assumption of competence. Many males cannot handle tools without hurting either themselves or the tools.
Everyone should be required to prove themselves. After having done so, all stereotype assumptions are moot.
