Any suggestions on ski areas/lifts to check out? I am going to the France Alps, West Germany, West/Mid Austria, Switzerland, maybe the Dolmites.

I have attached an approximate Google Earth pic of the travel area.

If you have a lift/area you want me to take pictures, give me the name of the ski area, ski lift and maybe a nearby town name. I will find it now and then if I am nearby, will check it out and bring back photos.

Leaving in 2 weeks.

Thanks!

You should pick up Rick Steve's Best of Europe. It came in real handy when I went to Europe in 2003 and would have missed out on a lot of cool sites if I didn't have the book.

Will you be driving or taking the train? How long will you be gone?

If you can, you should check out Gimmelwald, Switzerland (lifts galore), The Museum of Technology in Vienna, Austria (you will have to spend an entire day here since it's that cool - http://www.tmw.at/default.asp?id=1&cid...nglisch&am= ) and the Hallstatt Salt Mine Tour (http://www.salzwelte...t_bergwerk.aspx).

I would say start planning your vacation out now. We didn't start until we got over there and missed out on a lot of stuff. If you could list some of the things you would like to see and do while you're over there, I'll look through my Best of Europe book to see if I can find some places you might be interested in.

You should try and ride the 3S that goes over a valley like the one being built at W-B. Also the Galzigbahn looks pretty sick.

I loved Kitzbuhel when I was there, lots of old lifts mixed with new lifts and a great feel to the area. If you will be in the area Zermatt is awesome too. Both areas have awesome ski areas and beautiful scenery and great people. I was dissapointed with St. Moritz because it had too much of a snooty feel with just ok skiing, I was definately not impressed.

Theres a place for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed potatoes.

"You could say that a mountain is alot like a woman, once you think you know every inch of her and you're about to dip your skis into some soft, deep powder...Bam, you've got two broken legs, cracked ribs and you pay your $20 just to let her punch your lift ticket all over again"

driving and camping so there are a lot of options. Will be there for 4.5 weeks but one week will be on a backpacking trip. I believe we have done the salt mine tour before, that was cool. We have been planning our trip for about 6 months now but I haven't looked into the ski/lifts part until now.

There is also a Ropeway Museum in Switzerland, but I'm not quite sure where it is. I believe in the Interlaken area, although everything is in German.

The Museum of Technology has a small section about aerial trams/ropeways but I wasn't impressed with it. It has a small section of haul rope that you can examine and read about the first passenger aerial tramway. This section might have been approved upon since I was there since the Museum had just opened the year before.

Also, Gimmelwald is where the Schilthorn Tramway is, which was made famous in the Jame Bond Movie, On His Majesty's Secret Service. Gimmelwald also has a lot of scenic hiking trails and I presume you could spend a few days there, actually the surrounding area.

If you make it to central Austria, check out the Glacier Bus at Hintertux - bring your skis because there's skiing on the glacier (for now) during the summer months. Also from the top terminal on the backside of the area, there is a chairlift that has a sheave assembly that is bolted to a cliff wall in lieu of a more conventional tower support.

Hey guys, I found a computer and am in the French alps, near Val D'Isere. French keyboards are killer... I have seen some lifts already, lots of real Poma lifts that detach and some new lifts too. Havent actually been to Val.. yet but I might do some skiing there. There is like no snow at 2600m here, Cypress peak has more at home at 1500m.. Thanks for all the suggestions. Am going to get to Gimmewald and St Anton for sure and maybe some others. There are so many hills here, like in every 2nd village...

A photo at Val Cenis, in a recent dopp yearbook I believe. I will have lots of photos when i get back

If you get to that area go to the Ski Zillertal 3000. (Includes Hintertuxer Gletscher.) At Mayrhofn there is a crazy bicable gondola called the Penkenbahn. And also in Austria, go to Kitzbuehel. You might be able to get some pictures of the 3S. That would be cool.
