That is true, Big Sky can be coooold and dry in December. It just depends on the year. I wouldn't go to Big White if you don't like crowds.

OK i've narrowed down to the following:
I still have some questions about these though
Red Mountain (Big enough for 1 week???)
Fernie (Is it getting really commercialized???)
Sun Peaks
Silver Star
Big Mountain (does it suffer like big sky does???)
Steamboat (is it crowded like the rest of Colorado???)
If anyone has skied these places your opinions will be gratefully appreciated!

Do you know if it suffers the cold, dry, and snow lacking weather that big sky can???
Is there any other recommendations??

I've only been to one area out west and that is the Aspen area. As long as you can afford going there, I would suggest it as there are four resorts near the town (Aspen Mt, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass). All of the mountains are under the same ownership now so one multi day ticket works at them all. It is a good location because if you stay in town, then it is really easy to get to the other mountains as there are FREE skier shuttles to all of them. I have been going out there for the past six years for a week at a time and it never gets old. Especially Snowmass as it is pretty big and has every type terrain.

When I went to Aspen this past December (17th - 18th), there was hardly anyone at Aspen Highlands (it gets less than 200,000 skier visits a year) and Snowmass didn't have any crowds either to speak of.

Cool, aspen slipped my mind because I thought it was really crowded-
I think it is between Aspen, Red, and Sun Peaks possibly Steamboat too

Any opinions on the places???

Montana is too cold for the family-so Big Sky and Big Mountain are Out

Steamboat Springs, Colorado- A hidden jewel of a valley ski area with excellent skiing and great hospitality with TONS of lodging available, you can not go wrong! It is one of my favorite places to go, winter and summer!

Except it's pretty crowded over winter break. I had to wait 30 to 40 minutes every morning to get on the gondola.

Definitely Powder Mountain! It is the largest ski resort in the U.S. with 5,500 acres of skiable terrain. I highly doubt you will find a resort in North America with so much to offer with such small crowds. Most of the Utah locals ski Powder Mountain because they can avoid the massive groups of tourists and because it's sorta out of the way. I skied there all last season and the longest I EVER waited in line for a lift was about a minute. $50 for a lift ticket. As JustJeepIt said, world class Snowbasin is only 15-20 minutes away. Snowbasin gets pretty busy on the weekends so you could hit that mountain Mon-Fri. If you get bored with the groomed stuff at Powder Mountain, you can do the snow cat skiing on Lightning Ridge for $8 a trip. They have pretty good night skiing too. This past season they put in a new HSQ up to the Hidden Lake Lodge. Now you can do A LOT more skiing in a day. Ogden is about 25-30 minutes away and it has bars and clubs you could go to. I would also recommend Big Mountain, but i am not sure about the cold weather or the holiday snow. If anyone could help out with the earthly season conditions it would probably help him a lot.

I spent a couple weeks at Big Mtn and it was great. If your concerned about cold, go in late February. Its a cool mtn and with the condo's on the hill you never have to drive anywhere. Free lift to the resort and groomed runs that take you back to the condo's. (at least that is how it was when I went)

Aspen is great too and is very possible to ski on a budget. My last trip to the Aspen resorts was a total of $300 on lodging, tickets, and food for four days. There is a little hostel in glenwood that offers private rooms for $24/night, they truly are just a mattress in a small closet but the for the budget minded traveler its perfect with a warm room, two kitchens and the RFTA bus stop right out front.

Theres a place for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed potatoes.

"You could say that a mountain is alot like a woman, once you think you know every inch of her and you're about to dip your skis into some soft, deep powder...Bam, you've got two broken legs, cracked ribs and you pay your $20 just to let her punch your lift ticket all over again"

Well, I wondered if anyone was going to suggest it........

Hmm, it has big vert., lots of variety, enough lifts to keep the lines down, lots of hotels and bars (esp. when you include town.)

Nah! Too much fun, don't go there!
